Today was an exciting day for our department, and even more so for one of our own.

Today, Firefighter Nolan Kvinlaug graduated from the inaugural Rensselaer City Fire Department CTE Firefighter Training Program.

This program was created to give high school students the opportunity to learn about the fire service and expose them to a potential career path.

Over the past year, these students completed BEFO, CPR, wildland search and rescue, and management courses, all of which counted toward their high school grades.

Firefighter Kvinlaug has been a key part of our team since joining the department. He is one of the first to volunteer for any task, no matter how big or small.

We would also like to acknowledge the commitment of the Rensselaer City Fire Department, which spearheaded this program from start to finish. Their unwavering dedication to each student is commendable.

In addition, we thank the East Greenbush Central School District for adopting this program as part of its curriculum.

If you are interested in this program for the 2027 school year, please reach out.

Congratulations again, FF Kvinlaug, on a job well done! You have a bright future and a great career in the fire service ahead of you.

It is with profound sorrow we announce the untimely passing of Active Life Member and Fire Police Captain Tom Whittemore following a brief illness. Tom joined the East Greenbush Fire Company on July 17, 1979. He served in many offices and capacities throughout his nearly 47 year career as a volunteer firefighter, and continued to serve a pivotal role in both the Fire Company and the Fire District at the time of his passing.

In addition to Captain of the Fire Police, Tom will be most remembered for his role as our in-house “SCBA expert,” handling and managing maintenance and repairs of our SCBAs and air compressor. Before moving to the Fire Police, Tom served for many years as a Safety Officer. His priority was always firefighter safety whether it be on the fire ground or protecting us from on-coming traffic. Tom assisted with new firefighter on-boarding, including issuing firefighter IDs and accountability tags and helping to manager our annual SCBA mask fit-testing. Tom welcomed every new member and everyone knew where they could go if they lost their ID tags.

Tom also took great pride in his role as our website manager. He captured pictures at calls, drills, parades and fundraisers and worked with the Chiefs and President to ensure our website was continually updated with the most current news, events and pictures. He took a particular interest in the history of the Fire Company and was proud of the new firehouse project. He captured pictures of the new building through the construction process to publish on our website. Finally, Tom was also our official pizza night and fish fry fundraiser “order taker” volunteering his time to answering phone orders or welcoming everyone as they came through the door.

Tom was a friend to all and his dedication, commitment, expertise and most importantly his friendship will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and worked with Tom. Please keep Tom, his family and his brother and sisters at the EGFD in your thoughts and prayers.

Busy Morning in Freezing Temperatures ❄️

It was a very busy start to the day for East Greenbush Fire District #3.

At approximately 00:30, Fire District #3 was alerted to a reported structure fire in the 1500 block of Columbia Turnpike. Units arrived on scene to find a working chimney fire in a residential structure and immediately began suppression efforts. Members operated on scene for approximately one hour before returning to service.

At approximately 08:10, members were alerted again—this time for a motor vehicle collision in the 700 block of Columbia Turnpike. Units secured hazards and were back in service by 08:45.

While clearing the traffic accident, East Greenbush Fire District #3 was once again alerted as part of the first alarm assignment for a reported structure fire in the Village of Nassau. Crews assisted with suppression efforts, search, overhaul, and also provided FAST coverage. Units returned to town at approximately 10:00.

With the continued stretch of freezing temperatures and the potential for a major winter storm in the coming days, we remind everyone to use extra caution when heating homes, garages, and businesses.

Stay warm and stay safe.
