🚨 Officer Spotlight 🚨

The Albany Police Department would like to recognize Officer Jayden Torelli, a 4-year veteran of the Albany Police Department for his commendable actions responding to an emergency this past week.

On Sunday, August 9th 2026 at approximately 3:05 PM, Officer Torelli responded to a call at the Corning Preserve Boat Launch located at 20 Quay Street for reports of a vehicle into the water.

As the first arriving officer, Torelli immediately entered a chaotic scene where multiple bystanders directed him to the suspect who was actively drowning the victim.

Torelli immediately made contact with the suspect, giving him clear verbal commands which led to a successful detainment and subsequent arrest.

While actively detaining the suspect, Officer Torelli was able to simultaneously direct bystanders to remove the victim from the water and start CPR.

The composed and controlled demeanor of Officer Torelli directly resulted in saving the victim’s life.

In the early morning hours of July 29, torrential rain began to fall throughout our response district, resulting in our first call for service at 5:58 a.m. From that point forward, our dedicated members responded continuously for more than 16 hours, answering over 80 calls for service.

Wet, cold, and tired, our members never stopped. The commitment shown by the more than 40 members who responded is truly commendable. These members left their jobs, previously scheduled appointments, and even their own homes—many of which were experiencing flooding themselves—to help our residents in need.

The East Greenbush Fire Company Auxiliary ensured our members were well-fed and ready to continue by providing two separate meals, along with snacks, throughout the day. Being able to get out of the rain and enjoy a fresh meal, even if only for a short time, was greatly appreciated.

We would also like to acknowledge the many agencies that assisted us throughout this historic event, including the East Greenbush Police Department, East Greenbush Emergency Communications Center, Rensselaer County Bureau of Public Safety, Schodack Police Department, Bruen Rescue Squad, Castleton Volunteer Ambulance, and multiple state and local public utility departments.

A special thank you goes to the City of Rensselaer Fire Department, which provided an additional staffed engine for much of the day. Their assistance ensured that a fully staffed apparatus remained available to respond immediately to "true emergencies" without delay.

As of this morning, our members remain deployed and continue to operate both within our fire district and in the City of Rensselaer. We expect calls for service to continue throughout the day, and we ask everyone to remain cautious while traveling.

Our department is continuing to respond to calls for service at this hour.

Presently, we have responded to over 70 calls for service since just after 6:00am on today’s date.

If you have a need to be out and about tonight, whether in our town or adjacent areas, motorists and other travelers should be aware of the possibility of rapidly changing road conditions and closed roadways due to floodwaters.

Remember - never drive through floodwaters in the roadway.

Columbia Turnpike between Miller Road and Schuurman Road is currently CLOSED in both directions due to fire department activity.

Please exercise caution in the area and follow the directions of the emergency services personnel.

Our department continues to field calls for service due to the heavy rain that has fallen overnight and this morning.

There are many basements that are flooded and several road closures.

We have all of our apparatus out (with close to 30 members aboard those apparatus) handling the calls (over 30 at this time) for service that have been reported to our communications center.

If you live in our fire district and require assistance with today’s heavy rains (or any other emergency situation), please contact the East Greenbush Emergency Communications Center at 518-479-1212 to report the situation.

Today, our members join our partners in public safety—the Rensselaer City Fire Department, Rensselaer City Police Department, and East Greenbush Police Department—to proudly display the American flag as the 17th Annual Tribute to Fallen Soldiers Memorial Torch Motorcycle Ride passed through our area.

This year's ride honors CW2 Casey N. Frankoski, CW2 John M. Grassia, and Staff Sergeant Derek J. Farley.

We are grateful for the opportunity to pay tribute to their service, sacrifice, and enduring legacy. 🇺🇸

Congratulations to Firefighter Nolan Kvinlaug! Tonight, Nolan graduated from the NYS I.F.O. (Interior Firefighting Operations) class at the Rensselaer County Emergency Services Training Center. Nolan has sacrificed many week day evenings and weekends for his certification. We are happy to have you on our team and look forward to your continued success. Nolan is also a graduate from the City of Rensselaer FD CTE program. Thank you to all of Nolan’s instructors. 🚨 Traffic Advisory – Gilligan Road 🚨

Please use caution if you're traveling on Gilligan Road today between 10:15 AM and 11:15 AM as our department assists with the Goff Middle School last-day-of-school send-off.

Motorists should expect temporary delays and increased traffic in the area. The East Greenbush Police Department will also be on scene assisting with traffic control and helping pedestrians safely exit the school.

On Saturday, June 13, the East Greenbush Fire Company participated in the 137th Annual Hudson Valley Volunteers Firefighter Convention parade hosted by the Lake George Fire Company. The HVVFA, which first organized in 1889, represents and advocates for volunteer firefighters in 16 Counties from New York City to Lake Placid. The East Greenbush Fire Company joined the HVVFA in 1917, a year after the Fire Company was established in 1916.

Each year, the association hosts a convention highlighted with a Mardi Gras parade on Friday, followed by a dress parade of member companies and invited guests on Saturday. The convention parade includes competition against some of the largest fire departments in NYS. The EGFD has won numerous awards at these parades over our last 110 years. Marching and parade competitions has been a long standing tradition and value in the EGFD and it is a weekend our members and their families look forward to each year. Some past awards include Best Overall unit which we won in 1993 at the HVVFA parade in Saratoga Springs and again in 1995 at the parade hosted by the Lake Placid Fire Department.

This past Saturday, 58 active members participated in the parade in Lake George. We proudly marched down Canada Street behind the Red Caps marching band. The culmination of hard work, dedication, and hours of tireless preparation to once again be awarded and recognized as the BEST OVERALL parade unit out of the more than 60 departments who participated in the parade. An award we strived to achieve over the last 31 years since our victory in 1995!

This was an emotional victory. The award and recognition is more than another trophy on our shelf. It represents the continued commitment, dedication, family and tradition dating back more than a century, spanning generations of firefighters and EGFD families. While it has taken us 31 years to once again win Best Overall, our members show up day-after-day, year-after-year, and strive to do better and carry on the tradition and the pride we have in our firehouse family on the fire ground or marching down the street.

Congratulations to our members and their families who support our efforts. This victory represents members past and present, some in spirit who faithfully showed up every year with the hope and intention of winning the best overall recognition. It is also for the Town of East Greenbush and Rensselaer County who we proudly represent at each convention and parade we participate in. While we bask in the glory of this achievement, we will begin to plan and prepare for our return to Lake George in 2027!
