Byrne Side fire update 08/06/2026: Crews continue to work on and improve the established fire lines. Forward progression of the fire was halted yesterday evening. Crews will remain on scene throughout today and are making great progress. The burn area will be monitored for any additional fire.

A wildfire that broke out south of Rexburg on Wednesday afternoon was sparked by railroad repair work, not the nearby Big Rock Fire, Madison Fire Department officials said.

Update 8/6 12:30 pm: crews continue to work on and improve the established fire lines; forward progression of the fire was halted yesterday evening; crews will remain on scene throughout today and are making great progress; the burn area will be monitored for any additional fire

Update 10:24 pm: significant fire activity has been stopped, there’s been no further growth since this evening, the fire will be watched throughout the night, containment efforts will resume first thing tomorrow morning - we are very thankful for the quick response from all who helped this afternoon and evening!

Original post: New fire start in the Sunnydell area south of Rexburg, named the Byrne Side Fire, approximately 100 acres at 5 pm

How does a department with only nine personnel on duty respond to a major wildfire while still answering 911 calls?

The answer is planning, partnerships, and mutual aid.

During the Big Rock Fire, many of you saw firefighters and equipment from Jefferson County, Bonneville County, BLM, Idaho Department of Lands, INL, Roberts, Idaho Falls, Blackfoot, Shelley, Fort Hall, and many other agencies protecting Madison County. That's exactly how the fire service is designed to work.

On incidents of this size, resources are assigned where they're needed most based on staffing, equipment, and experience. Madison Fire has been on the Big Rock Fire since day one, working alongside our local, state, and federal partners while also maintaining emergency fire and EMS coverage throughout Madison County.

Just as our neighbors come to help protect our community, Madison Fire is proud to answer the call when they need us. That's what mutual aid is all about—working together to protect all of our communities.

Madison Fire Department's 12-person Fuels Module is assigned to the Big Rock Fire, working behind the scenes to protect homes and strengthen containment efforts.

While you may not see them on the fire's edge, they're building fire line, reducing fuels, and creating defensible space to help keep the area safe.

We're proud of this hardworking crew and everything they're doing to protect Madison County and support the firefight.
