Yesterday, we said "see you later" to one of the very best as we congratulated Chrissy Smith on her retirement after an incredible 28 years of dedicated service to the Rolla Police Department.

Chrissy began her career with the department in 1998 as a telecommunicator after serving with the Dent County Sheriff’s Department. Over the next nearly three decades, she became a cornerstone of this organization, serving in Communications, Patrol, and Operations while earning the respect of everyone fortunate enough to work alongside her.

Throughout her career, Chrissy held numerous roles including Communications Supervisor, Patrol Corporal, Senior Telecommunicator, Operations Assistant, and Reserve Sergeant. No matter the assignment, she brought professionalism, leadership, compassion, and an unmatched work ethic to the job every single day.

Chrissy’s impact went far beyond her titles. She was someone people trusted. Officers sought her guidance, coworkers leaned on her support, and countless young people benefited from her mentorship through the Junior Cadet Program. She was the type of employee every department hopes to have — dependable, humble, hardworking, and always willing to help wherever needed.

Her decorated career included numerous awards and commendations, including the Judge Mayberry Award, Meritorious Award, Grand Cordon Awards, Exceptional Duty Awards, and recognition from both our department and outside agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service.

While retirement is well deserved, there is no question that Chrissy leaves behind very large shoes to fill. Losing someone with her experience, leadership, and heart is difficult, and it simply will not be the same without her around.

Chrissy, thank you for your years of service, your loyalty to this department, and the lasting impact you have made on this community and everyone who had the privilege to work beside you. We are proud to celebrate your remarkable career and wish you nothing but happiness, relaxation, and success in this next chapter of life.

Congratulations on your retirement — you truly earned it.

Last night’s Respect for Law Banquet was a wonderful reminder of the importance of service, partnership, and community support throughout every part of the justice system. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Rolla City Mayor and current Optimist Club President Lister Florence and the rest of the Rolla Optimist Club for hosting such a meaningful event that recognizes and honors those who dedicate their lives to serving others.

The “circle of law” extends far beyond law enforcement officers alone. It includes probation and parole officers, public defenders, attorneys, judges, prosecutors, court clerks, victim advocates, and many others who work every day to protect our communities and uphold justice. Events like this highlight the positive impact that service organizations and members of the legal system have when they come together in support of one another and the community they serve.

A special thank you to the Rolla Lions Club for their generosity in providing both the venue and a wonderful meal for everyone in attendance. Your support helped make the evening truly special.

We would also like to thank:

•Missouri S and T Police Chief and Optimist member Doug Roberts for serving as emcee for the evening.
• Former City of Rolla Fire Chief Ron Smith for delivering an inspiring and heartfelt speech.

Congratulations to all of the outstanding award recipients:

• Rolla Police Chief Sean Fagan
• Former City Administrator John Butz
• Former Mayor Lou Magdits
• Phelps County Victim Advocate Crystal Cox

Your dedication and commitment to service continue to make a lasting impact on our community.

Finally, a special thank you to all participants in the Respect for Law drawing contest. The creativity and encouragement shown through your artwork is truly inspiring to the law enforcement officers and public servants throughout our community. Congratulations to all of the winners on your incredible work. Our three award winners include Anissa Williams, Benten Thedford, and Thu Nguyen. Amazing job!!

Thank you again to everyone who helped make this event such a success and for continuing to support those who serve our community each and every day.

This Memorial Day, the men and women of the Rolla Police Department pause to remember the brave heroes who gave their lives in service to our nation.

Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy every day, and their courage will never be forgotten. Behind every name etched in memory is a family forever changed, a future surrendered, and a legacy of honor that continues to inspire us all.

We also remember the families carrying the weight of that sacrifice long after the uniforms are folded and the flags are lowered. Your strength and resilience are not overlooked.

As we gather with loved ones this weekend, may we take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day — not simply a holiday, but a solemn reminder that freedom has always come at a cost.

Today, we honor the fallen.
We remember their service.
We carry forward their legacy.
