Today, members of the Sacramento Fire Department were honored at the annual Mee Awards Luncheon, a longstanding tradition recognizing meritorious acts performed by local first responders.

This year, Sacramento Fire's Captain Peter Vandersluis, Engineer Kyle Karnow, Firefighter Mike Thawley, and Firefighter Ryan Brown were all recognized for their extraordinary actions during the helicopter crash on Highway 50 in October 2025.

As the first Sacramento Fire crew to arrive on scene, these four members were faced with a chaotic and rapidly evolving emergency. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, they quickly coordinated rescue efforts, directing bystanders to assist in lifting the helicopter so trapped occupants could be safely extricated. Their decisive leadership and teamwork, under pressure, helped save lives during a critical moment.

While acts of heroism often happen away from the spotlight, today provided an opportunity to recognize the dedication, courage, and professionalism these firefighters bring to our community every day.

Please join us in congratulating Captain Vandersluis, Engineer Karnow, Firefighter Thawley, and Firefighter Brown on this well-deserved recognition and thanking them for their outstanding service to the residents of Sacramento.

This Memorial Day, as our community takes time to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, many will also head outdoors and enjoy our waterways.

If you’re spending time near the water, please make safety part of your plans. Always wear a life jacket, keep a close eye on children, stay hydrated, and never boat under the influence.

From all of us at Sacramento Fire Department, have a safe and meaningful Memorial Day
