30 YEARS LATER, HER LIGHT STILL SHINES

Today marks 30 years since Correctional Case Manager Bonita Haynes was killed in the line of duty at Lima Correctional Institution in Ohio. She was only 29 years old.

Bonita’s loss inspired significant correctional safety reforms, including protections against working alone and greater access to man-down alarms. Her legacy also lives through a memorial garden, a scholarship program that has helped 27 young people pursue their education, and a community that continues to illuminate its porch lights in her honor.

Bonita’s mother, Sarah Haynes, spent the years following her daughter’s death ensuring Bonita would never be forgotten. As a CPOF Field Representative, Sarah extended that same love and support to other families of fallen correctional professionals. Following Sarah’s passing in December, the responsibility to carry Bonita’s memory forward now belongs to all of us.

Today, we remember Bonita. We honor her service, the changes created through her sacrifice and the lives that continue to be touched in her name.

Thirty years later, her light is still shining, and she will never be forgotten.
