Every drop counts!💧Our division put down roots with Slow the Flow and many others this weekend by converting the park strips at the Governor’s Mansion from thirsty turfgrass to lush, waterwise plants.

Even a simple action like adjusting park strips can greatly reduce water waste. Lawns are generally overwatered. And in narrow areas like park strips, water often ends up on the pavement anyway. Choosing waterwise plants instead keeps our homes cooler, resilient and beautiful. 😎

Protecting the Great Salt Lake requires more than a single project or a few good water years. Utah is pursuing a long-term strategy focused on getting more water to the lake, improving water efficiency, protecting critical habitat, and putting policies in place to sustain the lake for generations to come. It’s a long-term commitment, and we’re in it for the long haul.

Welcome to an interconnected world where land, water and wildlife collide. Great Salt Lake is essentially a bustling international airport for millions of migratory birds and a global hotspot for tiny brine shrimp.
To keep this vital ecosystem thriving, the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem Program (housed within the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources) works behind the scenes to protect the lake through key efforts:
Surveying avian populations: Millions of migratory waterfowl and shorebirds rely on the lake as a massive highway buffet, a safe breeding ground and a place to raise young. We're out there regularly surveying feathered visitors to make sure they have what they need.
Managing brine shrimp populations: We manage the commercial harvest of brine shrimp cysts. It’s a multimillion-dollar business that makes Great Salt Lake world-renowned.
Data collection: We work with partners to keep tabs on environmental data that supports the species that rely on the lake.

It’s that time of year! 🎡🍦 The Utah State Fair opened today, and we’re excited to see you at our wildlife building! Come say hi, check out the fish tanks and learn more about Utah’s mule deer herds. 🦌🐟 On Fridays–Sundays (from 4–7 p.m.), kids who are 11 and younger can fish for free in the pond behind the building. The fair runs through Sept. 20, so you have a couple of weekends to join in the fun!

Join the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources on Sept. 26 at 10 a.m. to learn how MOTUS works, how Utah is contributing to this global effort, and how researchers are using the latest technology to track wildlife.

This event is free to attend, but we kindly ask attendees to bring a non-perishable canned food item for donation. We’ve partnered with the Bountiful Food Pantry to support those experiencing food insecurity in our community.
