Meet the western spotted orb-weaver.

Your friendly neighborhood web-slinger.

No, it won’t swing between cliffs. It won’t stop a runaway train. And getting bitten by one will only leave you with…a story about getting bitten by a spider.

What it will do is spend the evening building an impressive orb-shaped web, carefully weaving each strand before waiting for mosquitoes, flies, moths, and other flying insects to make a very unfortunate wrong turn.

It may not be swinging through the city or saving the day, but this little night-shift worker is still doing its part. By catching insects, it helps keep some of our least favorite flying neighbors in check.

Most active in late summer, western spotted orb-weavers can often be spotted around places like Antelope Island and the Great Salt Lake after sunset, when they’re busy building their webs.

If you come across one in a park, give it some space and let it get back to work. 🕷️

Happy Pioneer Day, Utah! 💛

Today we mark July 24, 1847—the day early pioneers first entered the Salt Lake Valley. But the story of pioneer grit doesn’t end at Emigration Canyon. It spans the entire state.

If you want to step into pioneer history today, here is where those stories live:

- This Is The Place Heritage Park: Stand at the mouth of the canyon where the 1,300-mile journey finally ended.

- Frontier Homestead State Park: Head down to Cedar City to see original horse-drawn wagons and the iron foundry pioneer families built from scratch.

- Territorial Statehouse State Park: Walk through Utah’s oldest public building, crafted by early pioneer builders in Fillmore.

The landscape at Kodachrome Basin State Park has been showing off its colors for millions of years.

In 1948, a National Geographic expedition saw the vibrant reds, oranges, and whites of Kodachrome Basin and named it after the famous color film.

Today, the park’s 67 sandstone spires continue to steal the spotlight. Come see the colors, explore the trails, and help keep this one-of-a-kind landscape wild.
