NEMSIS(National EMS Information System) www.nemsis.org The NEMSIS Project is an effort to create a National EMS Database.

The National EMS Information System (NEMSIS) collects, warehouses and shares the National EMS Database consisting of data from prehospital emergency medical care encounters from EMS agencies across the nation. The database will contain data from local and state agencies from across the nation. This effort will define EMS and pre-hospital care in a way never before imagined, improving patient care

and EMS curriculum and defining a standard on with to measure care. Agencies across the nation will be able to share the key elements of their data nationally.

This cross-sectional study used 2019 NEMSIS data to examine substance use and injury severity among 176,931 domestic assault cases involving EMS in the U.S.

Researchers compared substance use across demographic groups and injury severity indicators, including patient acuity, neurological impairment, and transport to a trauma center. The authors reported that alcohol was the most frequently reported substance, while drug use and combined substance use were more common among cases with severe injuries.

The study also reported differences by s*x in the associations between substance use and injury severity indicators. Female patients had increased odds of severe injury with any substance use involvement, while male patients had lower odds of severe injury indicators with drug use or combined use.

Researchers analyzed 2018–2022 NEMSIS data to examine EMS transport patterns for critically injured adult patients who met CDC field triage criteria for trauma center transport. The analysis looked at transport to a verified trauma center, or a destination ZIP code containing one, and how those patterns varied by U.S. region, rurality, and neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage.

The authors reported that 36,897,269 patients met inclusion criteria, and 19,874,008 (53.9%) were transported to a trauma center. Transport percentages varied by region, with the Northeast reported as the lowest and the Midwest as the highest (44.0% vs. 67.4%.

The article also described variation across rural and urban settings and by Area Deprivation Index. Overall, patients injured in more disadvantaged ZIP codes had a higher reported percentage of trauma center transport than those in advantaged ZIP codes (56% vs. 47%), though patterns differed by region and rurality.
