Sandra Yvette Desjardins, Ph.D., MLS, is excited to our team as the new Liaison Librarian for Clinical Library Services. She joins the Clinical, Academic, and Research Engagement (CARE) unit, where she will serve as the primary library liaison for our clinical enterprise, including the UT Multispecialty & Research Hospital, the Mays Cancer Center, and our various clinical operations, residents, and fellows.

Sandra comes to us from Houston, where she spent the last few years as a Research & Instruction Librarian at the Texas Medical Center Library. Her academic background bridges several fields, giving her a unique blend of perspectives that are incredibly valuable when serving a diverse healthcare community. She holds a Master of Library Science (MLS) from Texas Woman’s University and a Ph.D. in Community Psychology from National Louis University.

Alongside her library and healthcare background, Sandra has also worked as a professional editor and bookseller. Her deep connection to the written word and her editing expertise fuels her passion for helping individuals track down, refine, and connect with the exact information and resources they need.

In this role, Sandra’s primary focus will be integrating library expertise directly into our healthcare environments, building collaborative relationships with clinical departments, and ensuring that our providers, researchers, and students have seamless access to high-quality medical information to support patient outcomes.

About the Lecture

This presentation by Dr. Margaret (Maggie) Flanagan, MD, will explore the evolution of Alzheimer’s disease pathology assessments, tracing the journey from Alois Alzheimer’s first description in 1906 to modern biomarker-driven frameworks. Drawing on landmark longitudinal studies such as the Nun Study and the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study, it will highlight how brain autopsies, epidemiology, and advances in neuropathology have reshaped our understanding of dementia. This lecture will examine the role of co-existing brain lesions, the paradigm shift from clinic-based to population-based research, and how emerging tools like digital pathology and AI are transforming diagnosis and prevention strategies.

About the Speaker

Dr. Margaret (Maggie) Flanagan, MD, is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, where she holds the Baptist Health Foundation Endowed Chair in Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Disease Research. A physician-scientist and board-certified neuropathologist, she directs the Nun Study, the Biggs Institute Brain Bank, and the Neuropathology Core of the South Texas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. Her research integrates brain banking, digital pathology, and biomarker development to better understand dementia and improve diagnosis and treatment.
