A great evening supporting the Friends of DeWitt County Children at their Old Hollywood Whodunnit Murder Mystery Dinner. Good friends, plenty of laughs, and most importantly, a great cause supporting children and families right here in our community.

I have been blessed to work alongside and support organizations like this throughout my years in private practice and now through the work of the District Attorney’s Office. I was especially glad to help with the paddle raise tonight, where this generous community stepped up and raised more than $8,000.

Thank you to everyone who gave, volunteered, and continues to show up for the children of DeWitt County.

This morning, I had the opportunity to participate in the Rural Prosecutors Forum at the Texas District & County Attorneys Association Annual Criminal & Civil Law Conference in Waco.

Rural prosecutors face a unique set of challenges. We cover a lot of ground, work with limited resources, wear a lot of different hats, and depend heavily on strong relationships with our law enforcement and community partners. It is always valuable to sit down with prosecutors from across rural Texas, compare notes, and talk about what works.

Always learning, always working, and always looking for ways to better serve the communities of the 24th Judicial District.

Had the opportunity to help my father-in-law move some cattle from pasture to pasture on this beautiful, rainy Sunday. Thank God for the rain, and happy Sunday to the communities of the Fighting 24th that we’re blessed to serve and fight for. Wishing everyone a blessed week ahead!

Yesterday was my birthday, and I was blessed to spend it surrounded by a loving family, wonderful friends, and some of the best colleagues anyone could ask for.

This morning, it was back to work.

I took this picture of the DeWitt County Courthouse early this morning. The sun wasn’t quite up, but the lights were already on. I think there is something meaningful about that.

The work of our courthouses and county governments doesn’t always happen between 8 and 5. Across the 24th Judicial District, there are law enforcement officers, dispatchers, jailers, court staff, prosecutors, county employees, elected officials, and countless others who answer the call early in the morning, late at night, on weekends, and on holidays.

I am incredibly blessed to be one of them.

There is something special about walking into these old courthouses every morning, turning on the lights, and getting to work for the people we serve.

Yesterday was a good reminder of how much I have to be thankful for. This morning was another.

I had the privilege Friday evening of serving as emcee for Norma's House Children's Advocacy Center’s Badges & Bags Bingo in Yoakum.

Norma’s House is one of those organizations that does incredibly difficult and important work, providing a safe place for children who have been victims of abuse and bringing together law enforcement, prosecutors, medical professionals, and advocates to help those children through some of the hardest moments of their lives.

I am always proud to support Norma’s House and the dedicated people who do this work every day. We are fortunate to have them as partners in our communities and in the pursuit of justice.

Thank you for letting me be a small part of a great evening, and thank you to everyone who came out to support their mission.

Today, Refugio County Attorney Simon McCloud III, and I had the opportunity to meet with Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz and visit with law enforcement leaders and public officials from across South Texas.

Criminal prosecution is about much more than what happens inside a courtroom. Strong relationships with our law enforcement partners and fellow public servants are essential to keeping our communities safe. Opportunities like this allow us to strengthen those partnerships, exchange ideas, and continue working together in service to the people of the 24th Judicial District.

A Victoria County jury has convicted a man of continuous sexual abuse of a child. He was sentenced to decades in prison.

As we close out the week, the Fighting 24th wants to take a moment to recognize and honor the mothers who make this office, and our entire justice system, work every single day.

The mothers in our office wear a lot of hats. They manage trial dockets, advocate in the courtroom on behalf of the State of Texas, stand beside victims and their families, coordinate the countless moving pieces behind the scenes, and still greet the public with professionalism and kindness when they walk through our doors.

We also want to recognize all the mothers across the 24th Judicial District who help keep the wheels of justice turning day in and day out. Our judges, clerks, court reporters, probation officers, victim advocates, dispatchers, jail staff, and law enforcement officers balance demanding careers of public service with the equally important responsibility of raising families and caring for those they love.

That work is not easy, and too often it goes without enough recognition.

This weekend, the Fighting 24th tips its hat to all the mothers serving our communities across DeWitt, Goliad, and Refugio Counties.

Happy Mother’s Day weekend from the Fighting 24th.

Today, we join in recognizing Cinco de Mayo, a day that marks the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla.

What many may not realize is that the leader of that victory, Ignacio Zaragoza, was born right here in Goliad, Texas.

It’s a reminder that our communities are tied to history in ways that stretch far beyond county lines. The story of courage and leadership behind Cinco de Mayo has roots right here in the 24th.

Proud to serve a district where history like that started.

Today, the Fighting 24th doffs its hat to celebrate the birthday of our Secretary and Victim Assistance Coordinator for DeWitt County, Leigh Ann Harryman.

If an office is a body, Leigh Ann is its heartbeat.

Day in and day out, she takes care of this team and, more importantly, she takes care of the people who need it most. The victims and families who come through our doors are met with compassion, patience, and steady guidance because of her. That kind of work does not always get the spotlight, but it is the kind that makes everything else possible.

We are better at what we do because of her.

Happy Birthday, Leigh Ann. We appreciate you more than words can say.
