Bexar County is excited to announce the construction of the new Bexar County Animal Care Facility is underway. The new facility is an investment that will enhance the County's ability to provide safe, humane care for stray, lost, abandoned, and at-risk animals while supporting animal welfare efforts throughout the community. The $11 million new facility will have an adoption lobby, administrative offices and rooms dedicated for surgeries and exams.

The Bexar County Commissioners Court gathered yesterday, September 15, 2026, for a full agenda focused on community recognition, public input, and key decisions shaping the County’s upcoming fiscal year.

The meeting kicked off with ceremonial items honoring long-serving County employees, local leaders, veterans, and milestone anniversaries for organizations including The Children’s Shelter, Twang Brands, and Oakland Estates Neighborhood.

The Court also issued multiple proclamations recognizing National Adult Education & Family Literacy Week, Nephrology Nurses Week, National GEAR UP Week, and several County employee retirements and community contributions.
Major business items included:
Public hearings and adoption of the FY 2026–27 County Operating & Capital Budget of $2.6 billion.

Approval of maintaining the 2026 Bexar County property tax rate of $0.299999.
Numerous agreements supporting mental health services, transitional housing, public health initiatives, architectural and park improvements, and county infrastructure.

Expanding its housing finance strategy by allowing its Housing Finance Corporation to serve as a general partner in affordable housing developments. This enables greater financial participation and supporting the creation or preservation of at least 1,250 affordable family units in and around SAISD neighborhoods.
Emergency management action, including the adoption of a 90 day County-wide burn ban.

The Court also discussed items supporting public works, public health partnerships, flood warning system development, ARPA-funded infrastructure projects, and historical education efforts.

Overall, the meeting highlighted continued investment in public safety, infrastructure, health and wellness, community recognition, and long-term planning for Bexar County residents.

On September 15, 2026, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) granted access to its Home Disaster Loans, Business Physical Disaster Loans, and Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program, which will provide low-interest loans to qualifying homeowners, renters, and businesses in Bexar County following the severe storms that occurred in August.
Applicants may apply online, receive additional disaster assistance information, and download applications at sba.gov/disaster.

Don't miss the final work session and change memo for the 2026-27 Proposed County Budget on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. in the Double-Height Courtroom on the second floor of the Bexar County Courthouse.

In this session we will present, discuss and obtain approval on the up-to-date Proposed 2026-27 Fiscal Year Operating and Capital Budget, which will be adopted on September 15 and go into effect on
October 1.

Extreme heat advisory will be in effect this weekend
Hazardous heat is forecast Saturday with high temperatures up to 103 degrees and heat index values up to 109 degrees forecast.

Hot conditions continue Sunday into early next week and additional heat products may be needed.
Heat related illness is likely for those not taking proper precautions; promote and practice heat safety.
