Behind every strong nonprofit is a dedicated group of leaders helping guide its mission forward.

The Bexar County Family Justice Center Foundation Board of Directors recently held another productive Board meeting. Highlights included the presentation of the Foundation’s 2025 financial audit by CPA Erin Leece and a review of the IRS Form 990 by Bookkeeper Robert Paz—important steps that help ensure transparency, accountability, and strong stewardship of the resources entrusted to us.

Representing a wide range of professions and expertise, our Board members generously share their time, talents, and resources to strengthen services for survivors and support the long-term success of our mission.

Their commitment to helping survivors find safety, hope, healing, and justice is truly inspiring. We are deeply grateful for their leadership, partnership, and unwavering dedication to the families we serve throughout Bexar County. 💜

The photos include Board members and FJC leadership staff who attended in person. Additional Board members participated virtually and are not pictured.

Working together remains one of the most effective ways to keep victims safe, empower survivors, and hold offenders accountable.

As part of the District Attorney’s Office’s ongoing support of the Family Justice Center—including serving as the lead agency and housing its dedicated Protective Order Division within the Center, Executive Director Crystal Chandler and Senior Felony Protective Order Prosecutor Benton Leachman were once again invited to present at the monthly Prosecutor Lunch and Learn for continuing legal education credit.

The training focused on how civil protective orders fit into broader public safety efforts and connect to criminal cases, bond conditions, firearm restrictions, victim safety planning, and enforcement.

Protective orders are a key part of the coordinated approach used every day by prosecutors, law enforcement, victim advocates, and community partners.

With the collaborative efforts of the District Attorney’s Office, the Bexar County Commissioners Court, the City of San Antonio - Department of Human Services and the Bexar County Family Justice Center Foundation, the Protective Order Division has more than doubled in size since 2019—growing from 11 to 23 staff members a 109% increase in capacity to serve survivors. During that same time, the number of protective orders filed has increased by nearly 400%, further supported by the Civil District Court’s firearm surrender program spearheaded by Judge Monique Diaz.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Director Chandler and ADA Leachman for sharing their time and expertise to provide training for stakeholders in our community.

Today we celebrated one of our wonderful volunteer interns as she heads off to graduate school to become a counselor. 💜

Marissa Rummel has brought so much kindness, compassion, and joy to the Center — helping wherever she was needed and making a real difference along the way.

We are so proud of her and know she will be an amazing counselor. Once part of the FJC family, always part of the family! 💜

🌟 March Employee Superstars 🌟

Recognition never expires. Please join us in congratulating Elisabeth “Lisa” Galarza and Richard Loza, our March Employee Superstars!

This recognition is especially meaningful because it comes directly from survivors who completed our survivor surveys and shared their appreciation for the care and compassion they received.

Richard has served survivors at the Center since it opened in 2005, providing protective order services through Texas RioGrande Legal Aid. His close collaboration with onsite partners SAPD and the DA’s Protective Order prosecutors help ensure survivors receive the legal support and guidance they need.

Lisa has led the Dream Center since 2012, providing resources and social support to survivors and families. She also supervises and trains our social work interns, helping strengthen the Center’s capacity to serve more survivors with care and compassion.

Together, they reflect the heart of the FJC’s mission through their professionalism, dedication, and compassion for the people we serve.

Thank you both for the meaningful difference you make each day! 🌟💜
