Community Youth Center of San Francisco Since 1970, CYC has set the standard for awareness and activism in the Asian community.

For over 55 years, Community Youth Center of San Francisco (CYC) has provided the diverse youth of our city a sense of belonging and vital tools and experiences to succeed in life. Originally founded to address the problems of juvenile delinquency and gang violence in Chinatown, CYC has grown to encompass behavioral health, education, intervention, leadership development, street outreach and workforce development in all our programs. We offer services directed at responding to the complex set of issues the youth in our community face including acculturation, difficulties in school, economic hardship, substance abuse, and gang involvement. Our educational enrichment, leadership building, and job-readiness programs have earned CYC a unique reputation as a key agency for Asian youth services in San Francisco.

From Lake Merced to Hualien, Taiwan.

This September, 18 C*C Dragon Boat youth represented C*C, San Francisco, and the United States at the 15th International Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championships. After years of training together, they competed alongside teams from around the world and earned a bronze medal in the Under 18 Open Small Boat 200-meter race.

How do you tell the story of a summer?

Through the UC Santa Cruz HumLaunch Mentorship Program, interns Ayla and Georgia spent the summer documenting the experiences of C*C youth. Along the way, they followed a group of middle school students as they explored Balmy Alley, reflected on changes in the neighborhood, and transformed their ideas into a community mural.

In our latest blog, Ayla and Georgia share what they observed as students turned conversations into sketches and, eventually, a mural that reflected their own ideas.

Preparing for a career starts with opportunities to learn from people who do the work every day.

Through the UPS Community Internship Program, UPS professionals joined C*C to host a career panel, mock interviews, and networking session for youth in our JRELL, MYEEP, and YAWL workforce programs.
Participants practiced interview skills, asked thoughtful questions, and heard firsthand about careers at UPS and the experiences that shaped each speaker’s path.

Thank you to the UPS team for investing their time and sharing their expertise with San Francisco’s next generation of talent.

Every idea starts somewhere.

This summer, C*C students had the time to design, test, revise, and create. Whether they were building a model roller coaster, learning to code, experimenting with 3D printing, or performing music, they discovered that some of the best ideas take time to develop.

It’s a reminder that learning isn’t always about finding the right answer. Sometimes it’s about having the time to keep asking, “What if?”

When one student said that, the rest of the group immediately started pointing at each other, laughing, and calling out every new friend they had made.

It’s a small moment, but one that says a lot about what summer can make possible. As students built friendships, they also found the confidence to ask questions, read out loud, try something new, and return to school ready for what’s next.
