The Audubon Society of Rhode Island is an independent, not-for-profit environmental organization dedicated to statewide environmental education, conservation and advocacy. Establi

shed in 1897, it is the oldest environmental organization in the state. Audubon is one of the largest environmental educators in Rhode Island, reaching well over 20,000 students of all ages each year. Since acquiring its first wildlife refuge in 1924, Audubon Society of Rhode Island has grown to become one of the largest private landholders in Rhode Island. It now protects nearly 10,000 acres of wildlife habitat for future generations of Rhode Islanders. Many Audubon wildlife refuges are open to the public for wildlife viewing and enjoyment. Its vigilant advocacy programs and partnerships have kept the public and government informed of threats to the environment for over 100 years. Members of Audubon are kept informed through the Report, and eWing, our monthly email newsletter. The Audubon Nature Center & Aquarium and surrounding trails will be closing early or fully closed for a few dates this fall. Those dates include:

📅 Saturday, September 5: Early closure — 3PM
📅 Monday, September 14: Center & trails closed
📅 Sunday, October 4: Early closure — 2PM

Winter hours begin on Monday, October 19! That means starting that week, the Nature Center will be closed Mondays & Tuesdays, and open Wednesday-Sunday from 9:30 AM-4:30 PM.

Curious about the avian research we’re doing at RI Audubon? Join our Director of Bird Conservation, Dr. Sarah Deckel, to learn about our research and get hands-on experience with field-related bird conservation.

Learning Bird Conservation Techniques

The first hour of these seminars will be a lecture with background information about the technique in question, with relevant research studies and examples of how scientists use this technique in the field. During the second hour, YOU will be the scientist! You’ll have the chance to follow a protocol and analyze field data as though you were conducting your own study.

The first seminar on September 10 is on nest building! Participants will learn about songbird nest building, why birds choose certain materials for their nests, the pros and cons of nest types, and why insulation matters in nests. Then participants will partner up to dissect a nest, separating materials into groups and then weighing each material.

Excited for Raptor Weekend? Us too! In addition to owl and hawk presentations by Audubon experts, wildlife rehabilitators from across the Northeast will bring their expertise with birds of prey to the event. Here’s who will be there:

🦅 Masters Of The Skies—French native Gregory Martel is a Master Falconer who has worked with more than 55 raptors since 2010. He trains and flies hawks, falcons and owls for a variety of purposes, including hunting, falconry abatement (bird control) and education. He created Masters of the Skies in 2014 to educate the general public about birds of prey and falconry, and he has been working as a full-time falconer and educator since 2016.

🪶 Horizon Wings—Formed in 2001 by Mary-Beth Kaeser, Horizon Wings’ mission is to rehabilitate birds of prey for release into the wild in order to maintain their population, and to educate the community to enhance awareness of the environment.

🎤 Talkin’ Birds Radio Show—Ray Brown is a broadcast veteran with more than 30 years experience in commercial and public radio and television. His show, Talkin' Birds, is a live and interactive radio show about wild birds and the beauty of nature—attracting birds to your backyard, feeding them, and learning more about them.

🦉 Eyes on Owls—Marcia and Mark Wilson founded Eyes On Owls in 1994 as an educational enterprise that brings owls to schools and other groups to teach about these wild “neighbors” and their habitats.

🐦‍⬛ Congress of The Birds—As a state-licensed and federally permitted wildlife rehabilitation center, Congress of The Birds provides triage and stabilization for all species of wild birds in the New England area. As the only avian-specific rehabilitation facility in Rhode Island with an onsite release center, the clinic treats over 1,000 avian patients annually with the goal of returning them to their natural habitats.

We need your help to make Raptor Weekend a hoot! Whether it's greeting guests, helping with fundraising, or leading games and activities, we have a volunteer position for you.

Volunteer shifts are available:

📅 Friday, September 11th, 11AM-3PM
📅 Saturday, September 12th, 9AM-1:30PM and 1-5PM
📅 Sunday, September 13th, 9AM-1:30PM and 1-5PM

We are especially looking for volunteers who can help coordinate parking on Saturday or Sunday!

You may sign up for multiple shifts. Friday volunteers will receive a complimentary Raptor Weekend pass to return and enjoy the event on either Saturday or Sunday!

Calling all wildlife photographers! The deadline for our annual calendar contest is coming up quickly—make sure you get your photos in before Tuesday, September 15, 2026!

Why enter our contest? Every person who enters not only honors their own work but also helps the Audubon Society of Rhode Island communicate its mission to the public. Your image will be featured in our 2027 wildlife calendar, which will be available for purchase at the end of the year. Money from every calendar purchased goes directly toward supporting wildlife education, advocacy, and conservation in Rhode Island.

This is your last week to see the current art exhibit at the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium! "The Creative Naturalist" features a selection of pen and ink illustrations from Audubon's very own Tracey Hall. Her art will be on display and available for purchase until August 31.

About the artist: Audubon Environmental Educator and Summer Camp Director Tracey Hall is well-known across the state for engaging all ages in nature programs and outdoor explorations. She can frequently be found in libraries and classrooms, sharing her knowledge of the natural world with local communities. In addition, children and families in the state have benefited from her endless enthusiasm and experience as Audubon Summer Camp Director for over 25 years. Drawing and painting since a young child, her drawings are popular and beloved illustrations that appear on Audubon Camp t-shirts each summer. She also fulfilled a lifelong dream by writing and illustrating “Zach the Raven,” a book about an Audubon avian ambassador, which is available for sale in the Audubon Nature Shop in Bristol.
