July 5, 2026 Storm Damage Assessment Update

Following the severe thunderstorm that moved through Scurry County yesterday evening, July 5, 2026, the City of Snyder/ Scurry County Office of Emergency Management coordinated with the National Weather Service to conduct a post-storm damage assessment.

Based on field investigations, damage surveys, radar data, photographic evidence, and visual observations, it has been determined that the damage was the result of a “GUSTNADO” associated with the storm's gust front.

A gustnado is a small, short-lived circulation that develops along the leading edge of thunderstorm outflow. Unlike a tornado, it is not connected to the cloud base and can develop rapidly with little or no advance warning. Despite their brief duration, gustnados are capable of producing damaging winds that can result in localized structural damage, downed trees, and power line impacts.

This event serves as a critical reminder that Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are issued because conditions are capable of producing life-threatening weather—not just heavy rain or lightning. Severe thunderstorms can produce destructive straight-line winds, large hail, flash flooding, and rapidly developing circulations such as gustnados. These hazards can occur with little notice and can be just as dangerous as other forms of severe weather.

Too often, Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are viewed as "less serious" than Tornado Warnings. Yesterday's storm demonstrates why every weather warning issued by the National Weather Service deserves immediate attention. Waiting until damage is occurring or until a tornado is confirmed can leave little or no time to take protective action.

When a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued:
• Move indoors immediately.
• Stay away from windows.
• Continue monitoring trusted weather sources for updated information.
• Be prepared to move to a more protected location if conditions rapidly worsen.

Every warning is issued for a reason. Yesterday's event is a reminder that severe weather does not always fit neatly into one category, and dangerous conditions can develop in seconds. Take every Severe Thunderstorm Warning seriously—it could save your life.

The City of Snyder/ Scurry County Office of Emergency Management appreciates the continued partnership and assistance provided by the National Weather Service throughout this assessment, as well as the efforts of local first responders, public works personnel, utility crews, and citizens who reported storm damage.

We encourage everyone to remain weather aware, especially during the severe weather season, and to continue monitoring trusted weather sources for the latest forecasts and warnings.
