Please be advised there has been a confirmed cougar sighting in the area of S 53rd St and Main St in Springfield. The cougar was spotted up in a tree. Oregon State Police have been advised. We have attached some resources from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife on what to do if you encounter a cougar. Again, please exercise caution in the area.

Traffic crash with fatality

NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT:

On August 21st, 2026, at about 6:47 AM, SPD responded to a reported traffic crash involving a vehicle and a motorcycle in the 3700 block of Main Street. The first officers on scene found both vehicles to be on fire. Officers assisted the two occupants out and away from the burning SUV as witnesses to the crash assisted the motorcycle rider who was also down in the roadway.

Medics arrived shortly after police and began to treat all involved. The motorcycle rider, identified as 20-year-old Alexander Baugh, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The two occupants of the SUV were transported by medics to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates a 2015 Honda SUV had been traveling eastbound on Main Street and was making a left turn (north) onto 37th Street when the westbound motorcycle collided with the Honda. Excessive speed by the motorcycle is suspected as a contributing factor to the crash. The driver and passenger of the SUV are fully cooperating with the investigation.

The Springfield Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is currently investigating the crash.

Traffic crash with injuries

NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT:

On August 18th, 2026, at approximately 3:16 PM, the Springfield Police Department responded to the intersection of S. 35th Street and Oregon Ave for a reported traffic crash involving a vehicle and pedestrians.

The preliminary investigation indicates a 2026 Volkswagen SUV that was traveling westbound on Oregon Avenue struck a 2015 Toyota SUV that was traveling northbound on S. 35th Street. The impact of the crash caused the Toyota to roll over and land on top of four pedestrians walking on the sidewalk in the northwest corner of the intersection.

Three of the four pedestrians were transported by ambulance to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious but not life threatening. The drivers of both involved vehicles are cooperating with the investigation and impairment is not suspected to be a contributing factor of the crash. The Springfield Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is currently investigating the crash.

Beginning Monday, August 24th and extending through Sunday, September 6th, law enforcement agencies throughout Oregon will use federally funded enforcement hours to educate the public about safety belt and child seat laws including a law passed in 2017 increasing safety for children under age two.
