Great News! Starting on or after March 10th, 2025, Eugene's Rental Application Screening fees will be limited to a maximum of $10!

If you are overcharged after March 10th, please follow these instructions as outlined by the City of Eugene:
"If an applicant is charged more than $10 on or after March 10, 2025, they should talk to the landlord first, if the issue persists, they must follow up in writing (by email, text, or on paper) informing the landlord of the concern. If the landlord does not respond within 48 hours, the applicant can contact the City to file a complaint. The goal of the Rental Housing Program is to educate and help renters and owners communicate with each other to resolve compliance issues without further city involvement."

Eugene $10 Application Fee Cap Updates:
We are THRILLED to announce that The Supreme Court of Oregon has denied the plaintiff's appeal, so the Court of Appeals’ decision concerning Eugene's $10 Application Fee limit stands! This was the last step that property management companies could take in fighting this appeal. The city of Eugene, who is coordinating with landlords and tenants in Eugene, are working through communicating this news out to partners and what enforcement mechanisms will look like. We suspect more information will become available next week from Eugene, and we will link that communication in the comments section when it's available!

This is a huge win for tenants, not just in Eugene, but across the State! This legislative session already shows that our work in reducing junk fees and stronger renter protections has inspired statewide action through HB 2967 in this legislative session. This bill could potentially ban application fees statewide! Our Executive Director and many board members have been working to make this application fee cap a reality for many years, and we couldn't be happier to help make Oregon a leader in tenant protections in the United States.

Come join SETA as we launch our first Rentwell class of 2025!

Rent Well is a 15 hour tenant education program taught by certified instructors throughout Oregon and Washington that gives Renters the foundational tools and skill set to become successful and stable tenants. Graduates have access to the Landlord Incentive Guarantee Fund. RentWell teaches students of all ages topics like Tenant Rights & Responsibilities, how to best advocate for yourself to a landlord, tips on managing finances, and much more.

The workshop will take place from 6-8 pm at Lane Community College downtown, classroom 107, and will include presentations from Beyond Toxics, Springfield Eugene Tenants Association, Fossil Free Eugene, BRING, Nonprofit Home Inspectors, and Homes for Good. Food and stipends will be provided!

Every year new challenges face renters here in Eugene and Springfield, and we here at SETA continue to grow our organization to meet the need. This year, we have seen record increases in our hotline call numbers. As the need for supporting Oregon renters develops and changes, we have to continue to expand our staff and resources to maintain our quick turnaround times and the high level of attention we give to every call, and the individualized attention we give to the students in our education program.
