ARFF training is heating up. 🔥

Yesterday, SGF Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting team members participated in a live fire training on the airfield.

“The FAA requires Part 139 airports to recertify in ARFF operations, including live fire training to maintain commercial service,” said Eric Sanders, SGF aircraft services coordinator. “The live fire training is conducted annually, while other trainings are completed throughout the year to maintain our part 139 certificate. This work isn’t just required, it’s important for us to stay ready to respond.”

Joplin Airport ARFF and Branson Airport ARFF also attended the training for their recertification.

What is this, a center for aviators?

The SGF Annual Tabletop Exercise just got a BIG upgrade, thanks to Springfield-Greene County Office of Emergency Management.

Annual airport tabletop exercises are discussion-based simulations, mandated by the FAA to review and update our Airport Emergency Plan every 12 months. We complete ours every May.

But in addition to being required, our annual tabletop exercise is a great way to connect and collaborate with our mutual aide partners, including Greene County OEM.

This year, they brought a tiny town of our airport for the decisionmakers in the room to better visualize the simulated crisis and practice response with clarity and precision.

Next year, we have a full-scale exercise. But these conversations keep the airport and the skies safer, because safety over everything.

The City of Springfield, MO and the Springfield-Branson National Airport Board have announced the appointment of David Schaumburg, A.A.E., as director of aviation, effective June 28.

“I am very pleased to announce Dave Schaumburg as the next director of aviation for the Springfield-Branson National Airport,” said City Manager David Cameron. “Dave’s proven track record serving the airport since 2017 as assistant director and his commitment to excellence make him the ideal choice to lead the airport, which is a vital economic engine and asset for the City of Springfield. Congratulations, Dave."

Schaumburg has served as the assistant director of aviation - operations and maintenance since 2017, overseeing operations, airfield and facility maintenance, capital improvement programming and security.

“The City of Springfield has a remarkable team at the airport, and I have great confidence in selecting Dave to lead them as the airport enters its next chapter,” said Bill Hammitt, airport board chair. “Dave is first class in his experience, knowledge and commitment to excellence. He has a passion for aviation and a spirit of collaboration with community stakeholders, which make him an ideal leader to guide the Springfield-Branson National Airport forward.”

Prior to SGF, Schaumburg served as the airport manager of Denton (Texas) Enterprise Airport and assistant manager of airport operations at Kansas City International Airport. He holds a bachelor of science degree in aviation science from College of the Ozarks and is a licensed private pilot.

“I am honored to be selected as the next director of aviation for Springfield-Branson National Airport,” said Schaumburg. “Having grown up in the Ozarks, I’m thrilled to be able to build upon the foundation in place, ensuring that the airport continues to serve our community, our partners and our passengers with our exceptional team SGF! I appreciate the board’s confidence in me as we enter this next phase.”

Schaumburg is an Accredited Airport Executive through the American Association of Airport Executives and is the president of the Great Lakes Chapter of American Association of Airport Executives, an aviation organization that supports professional excellence for airport professionals in 13 states and two Canadian provinces. He serves as secretary on the board of directors for Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, Immediate Past President of the Missouri Airport Managers Association and is a Past Chair of the Missouri State Aviation Council.

Schaumburg will enter the role following the retirement of Brian Weiler, who served as director of aviation from 2011 to 2026.
