Stratham Fire Department

Stratham Fire Department Stratham Fire/Rescue/EMS Page is our way of communicating important information, tips, and news. Thank you for your continued support!

The Stratham Fire Dept was founded in 1951 to fill the need for an organized town agency to provide fire protection and life safety services utilizing local volunteers to provide the manpower. The Department operates two Fire Engines, a 3000 gallon Fire Tanker, one Forestry truck, and two ambulances out of our state of the art fire station on Winnicutt road in Stratham. We are supported by the Str

atham Volunteer Fire Dept Association and the Stratham Fire Dept Ladies Auxiliary. Together we support the community with Fire and EMS services, education and community outreach. Our current active responder membership is approximately 35-40 members who are fully trained and certified by the State of NH. The department membership devotes their time to support our operations, training and administration 24/7. In addition, we employ two paid part time members who man the station and cover calls during normal business hours M-F 7am-5pm, and on call after hours. The Department raises funds to augment the department's equipment and training needs by running the annual Stratham Fair with the Stratham Fire Dept Association. We hope you enjoy the information and news on our page and hope that you will come back and visit us often. Follow our twitter page for Duty Crew postings as well!

Important message and learning tool about calling in an emergency, written by a local dispatch/communication professional.

What if the most important person in an emergency isn’t the police officer, firefighter, or paramedic—but the person you never see: the caller?

One of the first things I would teach the community is that when you call 911, you have a responsibility too. We often teach children about public safety from a young age. I remember school tours of police and fire departments, and even visits from dentists teaching good hygiene. But somehow, we never got to meet the dispatcher—the person you actually speak to first when you need help.

We saw a powerful example of this yesterday in class regarding Robert Turner out of Michigan. He was unable to effectively communicate with the dispatcher, which ultimately led to a wrongful death lawsuit for negligence. It highlights something we don't teach the community nearly enough: how to communicate during an emergency.

People need to understand how to identify their location, provide an address or landmarks, describe directions of travel (I can't even begin to tell you how many people don't know which direction they are going), and clearly relay what they are seeing or hearing.

As dispatchers, our responsibility is to quickly gather information, determine what resources are needed, and get help moving. We want to assist the person on the line as fast as possible. But sometimes, unintentionally, the caller becomes the biggest obstacle to getting that help started. Panic, confusion, not knowing an address, or simply not understanding what information is crucial can cost valuable time.

I believe the community should learn that calling 911 is a partnership. The dispatcher has a responsibility to ask the right questions and dispatch the appropriate help, but the caller has a responsibility to provide the best information they can. If we teach people what dispatchers need before they ever have to dial, we give them a better chance of communicating effectively when the moment comes—and we give responders a better chance of arriving quickly.
