September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

For men in law enforcement, this one deserves attention.
Know the facts:
- About 13 out of 100 American men will develop prostate cancer.
- Risk increases with age, especially after 50.
- Family history can increase your risk.
- Prostate cancer often has no early symptoms.
- Some research has found a modestly higher incidence among police officers.
What deputies can do
- Know your family history.
- Talk with your doctor about whether a PSA blood test is right for you.
- Don’t wait for symptoms.
- Keep your annual physical on the calendar.
The American Cancer Society recommends discussing screening around age 50 for average-risk men, and earlier for those at higher risk.
