Nan Gray Davis Elementary

Nan Gray Davis Elementary Nan Gray Davis School was organized in 1965. It is named in honor of Miss Nan Gray Davis. In 1921, she came to teach at Theodore High School. W.

Miss Davis began her career as an elementary teacher in Escambia County. In introducing her to the faculty, Principal F. Breitling, with whom Miss Davis had previously taught, made this prophetic remark, "For serveral years we have had quite a turn over in teacher personnel, but now I think we have a teacher who will stick". And "stick" she did for thirty-five years. When Miss Davis retired in 195

8, she continued her passion for teaching, always finding a child to coach, the maid or yardman with an educational problem, a Sunday School class in need of a teacher, or someone upon whom she could bestow the blessing of her teaching. After she was stricken with a heart attack, she taught lessons of patience, courage, hope and faith to those who ministered unto her. The gentle soul of Miss Nan Gray Davis passed away on January 30, 1963. Miss Nan Gray Davis' influence and love of teaching and learning still lives on at Nan Gray Davis.

AFTERNOON CARLINE DISMISSAL: We expect our students and parents to follow these procedures to ensure a safe and efficient dismissal each afternoon.

1. Follow the directions of the teachers conducting dismissal.
2. Individuals picking students up must have the official placard from the school, which can be obtaind during Meet the Teacher on Tuesday, August 4.
3. To avoid delaying traffic, parents must stay in the vehicle, with the engine off and the number displayed.
4. Children will remain in the cafeteria until the “safe to load” sign is held up.
5. No traffic will be allowed to move while “safe to load” is up.
6. A second signal will be given to indicate that loading is complete, car engines may be started, and all cars may exit.

Drivers who refuse to follow the established safety patterns and procedures may be restricted from driving on campus. Students will not be dismissed to parents who walk-up to the cafeteria door. No cell phone use, smoking, or loud music during dismissal.

Congratulations to Dr. Agnew on his appointment as the new principal of Causey Middle School. While we are sad to see him leave, we are excited for this next chapter in his leadership journey. Dr. Agnew's positive attitude, dedication to students, and strong commitment to community engagement have made a lasting impact, and we know he will bring those same qualities to the Causey family. We wish him continued success and look forward to seeing all that he accomplishes in his new role.

The Alabama FOCUS Act prohibits all public K-12 students from using cell phones, smartwatches, and other wireless communication devices during the instructional day. According to the act, devices must be powered off and stored out of sight using whatever method is set by the local school board.

Nan Gray Davis Elementary will utilize a cell phone lock box that will be stored in classrooms during the school day to comply with this state law. Cell phones will be collected from students each morning and returned to students immediately prior to dismissal each day. Appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken to address any student who refuses to follow this policy.

If you have not completed online registration for the 2026-2027 school year, please remember to do so as soon as possible! All students (new and returning) attending a MCPSS school must complete online registration at www.mcpss.com. In addition, all students must submit two proofs of residence--either by uploading them to the registration portal or bringing them in to the front office during the indicated registration dates/times. Only those students who have completed registration and provided their proofs will be placed on a roll. Avoid the long line at Meet the Teacher on August 4 by making sure your child's registration is complete!

This week students from Dauphin Island, Burroughs, Meadowlake, Griggs, and Nan Gray Davis came together for the first week of our Literacy and Numeracy Camp!

Throughout the week, students have strengthened their skills in phonics, comprehension, problem solving, and much more. It has been exciting to see their enthusiasm for learning and the progress they are making each day.

A special thanks to our parents, students, teachers, staff, and building base coaches for helping to make this first week a success.

Beginning next week, students may wear school appropriate attire instead of uniforms.

We look forward to another great week of learning and growth!
