On this day in 1920, Peggy Lee was born in North Dakota.

Before she was a global jazz icon, she was Norma Deloris Egstrom, a teenager from Wimbledon, ND, chasing a dream. She would often travel to Valley City where she had her first live performance in 1936 at just 16 years old.

That early grit in Valley City caught the attention of WDAY in Fargo, where she was officially given the stage name Peggy Lee and the rest is music history.

You can find this mural memorializing her first step to fame at 151 Central Ave S in downtown Valley City.
