ALERT! State health officials are urging Hoosiers to take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites after the West Nile virus was detected in the state for the first time this year.

One mosquito sample collected in Vigo County has tested positive for West Nile virus. No human cases of the disease have been detected so far this year. However, the department of health expects to see further West Nile activity throughout the state as the mosquito season progresses.

Notice to Porter County residents concerning songbird deaths

The Department of Natural Resources has received reports of sick and dying songbirds in several Indiana counties, including Porter County. The sick birds show signs of neurological illness, eye swelling, and crusty discharge. The cause of the illness is currently under investigation by the DNR.
The DNR is recommending the following steps statewide:
• Stop feeding birds until the mortality event has concluded.
• Clean feeders and birdbaths with a 10% bleach solution.
• Avoid handling birds. If you need to handle birds wear disposable gloves.
• When removing dead birds, wear disposable gloves, and place bird and gloves in a sealable plastic bag and dispose in household trash.
• Keep pets away from sick and dead birds as a precaution.
Sick and dead wildlife can be reported to DNR using the reporting tool at on.in.gov/sickwildlife.

After 15 months of reporting, June 30th will be the last day that the Porter County COVID Dashboard and Charts & Graphs will be updated on the Porter County website. The decision to discontinue the updates were based on these factors:

- Our new cases by day are the lowest that they have been since April of 2020.

- We can no longer get accurate data on hospitalizations.

- The number of people who are viewing the dashboard daily has dropped dramatically from nearly 1,200 visits a day in April to around 100 visits a day in June.

- ISDH is no longer reporting any updates on Sunday.

Any citizens who visit our website after June 30th for COVID data will be referred to the ISDH COVID and Vaccination Dashboards.
