Honored to help make this long-overdue recognition a reality for Specialist Robinson. Highlights from Friday’s ceremony below in KIMT:

A Vietnam veteran received the Purple Heart he earned more than 50 years ago after a congresswoman's office helped overturn a previous denial.

Rep. Ashley Hinson presented the medal to Specialist Lewis Robinson for wounds he sustained while serving in Vietnam. After the Army denied Robinson's request to correct his military record in 2012, Hinson's office worked with him for more than a year to secure reconsideration of his case.

In 2025, the Army approved the request, corrected his military record and authorized the award.

Robinson answered the call in 1969, serving in the United States Army,, and in March 1971, while serving with the 14th Engineer Battalion during operations in Vietnam, his battalion came under enemy attack.

Rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire struck the convoy, and Robinson was wounded from the shrapnel.

"For his courageous service, the wounds he sustained, and being in the direct line of fire, he earned the Purple Heart medal," Hinson said. "Unfortunately, that recognition did not come when it should have."

Hinson said no veteran should have to spend years pushing to receive a medal they earned in combat. After Robinson's request to correct his military record was denied, he never gave up.

"While we cannot give back the years that passed, we can make sure history is set right," Hinson said. "We have a responsibility to keep our promises to the men and women who served."

Hinson thanked Robinson for his courage under fire, his sacrifice and his service to the nation. She also thanked his wife, Barbara, and his family and friends who stood beside him through the journey.

Just recently, my team met a constituent at a Hy-Vee veterans breakfast, who told us he lost his military medals in a devastating flood. He wasn’t sure it was even possible to replace them. My office worked with the National Archives and the Marine Corps to track everything down, replace his medals, and update his military records.

Overcoming the challenges that can seem impossible is what our service is all about. I am honored to represent Iowans - we will always go to bat for you!

More than five decades after he was wounded serving our country in Vietnam, Specialist Lewis Robinson finally received the Purple Heart he earned. It was an incredible honor to present him with this long-overdue recognition today, and my team and I were honored to work on his behalf and help him receive the recognition he deserves. Thank you for your courage, sacrifice, and service to our nation, Specialist Robinson.
