AI is leveling the playing field for dangerous technical knowledge, like how to misuse commercially available synthetic DNA and RNA to create bioweapons.

More than two years ago, I sounded the alarm on this with Congresswoman Julia Brownley in a bipartisan letter calling for stronger biosecurity guardrails. Since then, the Trump Administration rescinded the Biden-era screening framework and has failed to put new protections in place.

We need guardrails now, before these materials end up in the wrong hands.

Artificial intelligence is magnifying concern that criminals could unleash new pathogens.

Trump and Commerce Secretary Lutnick may have allowed hundreds of thousands of advanced American AI chips to be used by China over the past year and a half.

I hope to see them do more than close a loophole to correct their negligence, but the damage is already done. Congress must pass my Chip Security Act to prevent China from further benefiting from American AI chips and undermining our technological advantages.

The unexpected guidance suggests that the United States' best AI chips may have been making ​their way to the subsidiaries of Chinese AI firms.
