Today, Senator Dick Durbin and I conducted an oversight visit at a shelter with unaccompanied children in the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

These children are simply trying to live their lives after experiencing circumstances no child should ever have to endure. But the Trump Administration is threatening to deport these vulnerable children back into the circumstances they fled and is allowing funding for their legal representation to run out—even though they are following the proper legal processes.

How we treat vulnerable children says a great deal about who we are as a nation. I will continue standing up against the Trump Administration's cruel and unjust attempts to deport these children.

Last week in Naperville, I joined the community for a vigil to honor those who have lost their lives due to ICE's abuses of power.

No federal agency is above the law. Congress must rein in ICE and demand transparency and accountability for those killed by the Trump Administration's mass deportation operations.

Over 1,100 employees from leading AI companies—among them top staff—signed a letter asking the U.S. government to develop ways to “deliberately pace" AI advancement so safety measures can catch up. When business leaders get together and ask to be regulated, Congress should pay attention.

The last time we saw anything like this was the 2008 global financial crisis, when giant Wall Street investment banks asked to be converted to regulated depository institutions, and the Mortgage Bankers Association pleaded for regulation.

And when we in Congress responded with the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act, it ended the chaos and ushered in the strongest decade of continuous economic growth in our country's history.

Congress too often fails to act. It is time for Congress to pass AI regulation that is technically feasible, internationally coordinated, and protects our children, workers, and national security.

Top staffers from the biggest AI and technology companies urged the US government to slow the pace of artificial intelligence development so that safety and security measures can catch up in an open letter.
