This is the highest honor Congress can bestow upon civilians of this country, and everyone from the North Platte Canteen deserves it.

The Canteen was a beacon of hope for soldiers during such a troubling and uncertain time. Over 55,000 people sustained this effort for over four years, and every soldier that passed through saw the very best of what Nebraska has to offer.

Democrats in Congress spent months refusing to fund the law enforcement who keep our country safe. Senate Republicans got it done. I encourage the House to act swiftly and get this bill to the president’s desk.

82 years ago today, thousands of heroes stormed the beaches of Normandy – turning the tide against tyranny. Today, we honor and remember their incredible bravery as they fought for freedom around the world.

As temperatures rise and schools let out, Nebraskans across the state are mapping out their summer plans. And if you're looking for ideas, you're in luck because the Good Life is full of wonderful places to visit. Here are a few highlights worth putting on your calendar.

For baseball fans, the College World Series returns to Charles Schwab Field in Omaha from June 12–22. The tournament brings the top eight Division I programs in the country together in a double-elimination format to crown a national champion. Whether you're a lifelong fan or simply want to enjoy a game under the summer sky, consider attending this month.

Come late July, Burwell's annual Big Rodeo — running July 22–25 — is well worth the drive. From classic Saddle Bronc riding to the energy of the Wild Horse Race and Canadian Chuck Wagon Races, there's something for every member of the family. Kids can visit 4-H animals and exhibits, and there are countless sweet treats to enjoy.

Omaha's world-renowned Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is always worth a visit, with 160 acres of animals, plants, and unique habitats. This summer, the zoo is hosting “Late Nights at the Zoo” on select Thursday evenings — guests 21 and older can experience it after hours, strolling at a slower pace, sipping beverages, and connecting with nature. Highlights include a market featuring local artisans and music bingo. Select evenings will also feature a Kids Night Out add-on, giving families an evening out while the little ones have their own adventure.

Additionally, the Lincoln Children’s Zoo is home to over 400 animals and draws over 375,000 visitors each year. On select summer evenings, they offer “Brews at the Zoo” featuring live music and drinks from local breweries for adults. Their Family Fun Fest is scheduled for July 17 – a special after-hours event with face painting, a photo booth, carnival games, scavenger hunt, and more.

No list of Nebraska summer destinations would be complete without "Big Mac." Located eight miles northeast of Ogallala, Lake McConaughy is the state's largest reservoir — 30,000 surface acres of crystal-clear water lined with miles of white sand beaches. It draws boaters, anglers, campers, swimmers, wind surfers, and just about anyone who enjoys being outdoors. The fish grow to trophy size, the sunsets are breathtaking, and the beach is exceptional – right in the middle of the Great Plains.

For a relaxing adventure, Nebraska's rivers are a summer tradition all their own. The Niobrara, North Loup, and Platte are the perfect way to cool down in the heat, with plenty of outfitters offering tubing, kayaking, canoeing trips, and even “tanking.”

As summer winds down, don't miss your local county fair, a chance to support the 4-H kids and rodeo participants who've worked hard all year. Then mark your calendars for the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island, running Aug. 28 through Sept. 7. Eleven days of concerts, livestock shows, carnival rides, and all the sweet and savory food you can handle. There's no better way to close out the season.

These are just a few of the reasons Nebraska is such a great place to spend the summer – there are countless more. For a full calendar of events and destinations across the state, visit visitnebraska.com/events/calendar. Now, get out and enjoy the Good Life.

More than 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and that number is sadly predicted to rise to 13 million by 2050. I met with Nebraskans from the Alzheimer's Association to discuss how we can better support those impacted by this terrible disease.
