Twenty-five years ago, our nation was forever changed by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives taken that day and honor the first responders who ran toward danger, the ordinary Americans who acted with extraordinary courage, and the men and women who answered the call to defend our nation in the years that followed.
A generation of Americans has now grown up without a memory of that terrible day. Tragically, many young Americans have not been taught the history of radical Islamist ideology or the devastating consequences that can follow when such extremism is allowed to take root. We are now seeing some in younger generations embrace or excuse the very ideologies that have fueled terrorism and violence around the world. We have a responsibility to teach the next generation the truth about the September 11 attacks and why they happened. Remembering is not only about honoring those we lost; it is also about ensuring that the lessons of that day are never forgotten.
Twenty-five years later, join me in remembering the lives lost, honoring the heroes, and remaining committed to defending the freedoms that make America worth protecting.
We will never forget.
