It was wonderful to have met with Lieutenant General John Rafferty, the new Commanding General of the United States Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC), to discuss the importance of the space domain and missile defense in strengthening our national security and ensuring our soldiers remain prepared to meet potential threats. USASMDC plays a critical role in providing the Army with space, missile defense, and high-altitude capabilities that support our soldiers and strengthen our national defense.

Saddened to hear of Master Deputy Jillian Olson’s tragic death, I join Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department in sending prayers to her family, friends, and colleagues. Last week, I was grateful to attend the Education and Workforce field hearing titled, “Building an AI-Ready America: How AI Is Creating Opportunities Across America’s Workforce,” at the Georgia Cyber Innovation and Training Center in Augusta. I was joined by my colleagues, Congressman Rick Allen and Congresswoman Lucy McBath; President of Augusta University, Dr. Russell Keen; and others. This center is a public/private collaboration among academia, government, and the private sector, designed to meet the growing need for cyber security talent through creative training solutions, while shaping a culture of innovation.

I appreciated the opportunity to have met with leadership from the South Carolina Aquarium, including Chair of the Board, Jessica Brewer, to discuss the important role the aquarium plays in South Carolina. This facility features over 5,000 animals, interactive programs, immersive exhibits, and a Sea Turtle Care Center which rescues, rehabilitates and releases sick and injured sea turtles.

Grateful to have met with Kids v. Cancer, an organization that promotes pediatric cancer research by identifying structural obstacles in the research process such as new drugs, pediatric studies of adult drugs, tissue donation, and access to funding. We discussed the importance of removing these barriers to ensure every child has access to the necessary treatment.

It is always wonderful to meet with the Municipal Association of South Carolina including Executive Director, Todd Glover, and other local leaders from across the state to discuss important updates within our cities and towns. Founded in 1930, this association represents the state’s 271 incorporated municipalities, offering services, programs, and tools that will increase efficiency and effectiveness in their operations.

Happy 68th birthday to NASA. President Dwight Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 into law, establishing NASA as the nation’s civilian space agency. Today, NASA leads the study of Earth science, our Sun, solar system, and the larger universe, conducting cutting-edge research to advance technology and aeronautics.
