The Westport Fire Department is an organization of 23 full-time firefighters and 20 call-firefighters protecting the coastal Town of Westport, Massachusetts. Westport has a population of roughly 15,000 year round residents, which increases to around 25,000 in the summer months. Our response area is 64 square miles. Included in those 64 square miles is 35 miles of coastline made up of ponds, rivers

, and an ocean. Westport Firefighters work around the clock manning the following apparatus out of two fire stations:

3 Advanced Life Support Ambulances
4 Engines
1 Tanker/Pumper
1 Ladder Truck
1 Forestry Truck
1 Special Operations Unit
1 Rescue Jet Ski
Various EMA Units

Westport firefighters responded to a reported structure fire around 2 AM last night at Westport Market on American Legion Highway.

First arriving firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the building. Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire before it spread into the attic space. Structural damage was minimal, however the building did suffer from significant smoke damage. The fire, which is not considered suspicious, appears to have started in a piece of refrigeration equipment.

Mutual aid was received from Tiverton Fire and Dartmouth Fire District 3.

🌊HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 5 AM EDT EARLY THIS MORNING THROUGH THIS EVENING...

🌊WHAT...Dangerous rip currents expected.

🌊WHERE...Washington, Southern Bristol MA, Dukes MA, Nantucket MA, and Newport RI Counties.

🌊WHEN...From 5 AM EDT early this morning through this evening.

🌊IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

🌊PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
