Winds expected with storm this weekend

WIND MAP:

Most of Southeastern Mass and RI will be gusting between 45-60+ mph. There could be higher gusts if the inversion is weak enough overhead to allow some of those heavier winds at the 925 mb level of the atmosphere to punch through. Those winds are between 70-90 mph.

The east facing coastal areas, Cape, Islands, and the immediate south coast could gust to 70 mph if the storm gets here sooner and close enough.

Currently, I’m expecting sustain winds along the coast between 30-40 mph. There’s a possibility that the southern coastline and islands could get sustained winds as high at 50 mph.

Once you start going further north and west, the wind component will be 35-50 mph but could see an isolated gust to 60 mph if those heavier winds mix to the surface.

PRECIPITATION MAP:

Most of the Southeastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Southern parts of Worcester County and portions of Northeastern Massachusetts will see between 4-7”+ of rain. There’s an area of RI and SE Mass that I outlined that could see spots in the 6-10” of rainfall.

The northeast winds will create an ocean influence. This will enhance moisture across these areas. Another factor is the tropical downpours. The models usually have difficulty with this as it seems it always puts less than more rainfall when tropical downpours are involved.

Since this storm is expected to take a left turn towards New Jersey, it’s possible that southern CT could end up with much higher amounts. I put 3-6”+ to factor in the possibility that it could end up with areas in the 6-10” range.

Any heavy downpours will increase the possibility of flash flooding.

An impactful “Nor’easter” is forecast to hit our area over the next several days. We can expect periods of strong winds, rough seas, and heavy rain Friday through Monday, along with minor coastal flooding and coastal erosion, particularly at high tide.
