Happy Higher Education Day!

Did you know that opportunities for learning don't just happen in a classroom? Right here in our community, young minds can explore science, engineering, history, nature, and problem-solving through hands-on experiences that inspire future careers and lifelong learning.

This summer, local children ages 5–12 can dive into STEM, environmental science, engineering, and history through the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area's Summer Camp program. From exploring the Colorado River and wetlands ecosystem to tackling engineering challenges and uncovering history at the Yuma Territorial Prison, campers will discover that learning can be an adventure!

🌱 June 16–18: Wetlands & Desert Explorers
🔒 June 23–25: Prison Break Challenge at the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park

Happy World Environment Day! 🌿

Today we celebrate the importance of protecting and preserving the natural spaces that connect our communities, wildlife, and future generations.

The stands as a remarkable example of environmental restoration along the Colorado River. Once impacted by invasive vegetation and neglect, the wetlands have been transformed into a thriving habitat for native plants, birds, pollinators, and wildlife while providing a beautiful outdoor space for the community to explore and enjoy.

From walking trails and scenic views to important conservation efforts, the wetlands remind us how restoration and stewardship can make a lasting impact on both people and nature.

This World Environment Day, we encourage everyone to take time to appreciate the beauty around us and continue supporting efforts that help preserve our environment for future generations.

Last night, a fire impacted approximately 0.82 acres of Honey Mesquite and Cottonwood habitat along the South Channel riverfront within the Yuma East Wetlands.

Thanks to the rapid response and coordinated efforts of the Yuma Fire Department and BLM Fire, the fire was quickly contained before it could spread further or reach the Guenther Overlook. Their swift action helped protect valuable wildlife habitat, recreational trails, and public infrastructure.

This morning, Yuma East Wetlands staff conducted a site assessment to evaluate the damage. At this time, there is no evidence of camping activity in the area, and an investigation has been requested to determine the official cause of the fire.

Cleanup efforts will begin next week to remove damaged vegetation and ensure the area remains safe for visitors. All access roads have been reopened, and the trail system remains accessible.

We are grateful to the firefighters and emergency personnel whose quick response prevented a much larger incident. This serves as an important reminder that even a discarded cigarette or small ignition source can have significant impacts on our natural areas.

Thank you for helping us protect and preserve the Yuma East Wetlands for future generations.

Celebrate World Bicycle Day at the Yuma East Wetlands!

The Yuma East Wetlands trails offer one of the best local spots to get outside, ride, and enjoy the beauty of the Colorado River region. With scenic pathways winding through restored natural habitat, cyclists can experience peaceful river views, native vegetation, and a variety of local wildlife along the way.

It’s the perfect place to slow down, explore, and appreciate the outdoors while enjoying a ride that connects you directly to the natural landscape of the Colorado River corridor.

Whether you’re a casual rider or a seasoned cyclist, the Yuma East Wetlands provides an accessible and refreshing way to celebrate World Bicycle Day right here in our own backyard.

Great summer learning opportunity for local families and registration is OPEN, but filling up quickly.

The Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area is now accepting registrations for its 2026 Summer Camp for children ages 5–12, hosted at the Colorado River State Historic Park.

The camp runs in weekly sessions throughout June and July and offers hands-on experiences in STEM, environmental science, history, and outdoor exploration. Each week features a unique theme, including river engineering challenges, wetlands ecology exploration at the Yuma East Wetlands, and immersive history-based activities at the Yuma Territorial Prison.

Families can register for one week or multiple weeks, and each session includes new activities—making it ideal for repeat participation.

Camp highlights include:

Hands-on engineering and science experiments
Outdoor exploration and nature-based learning
Interactive history and storytelling experiences
Small-group, half-day sessions (8:30 AM–12:30 PM)
