Inland Rail

Inland Rail is a major freight rail line now under construction. Inland Rail is a 1,600km freight rail line, now under construction.

It is being delivered in stages to connect Australia while generating regional opportunities during construction and beyond. It will connect Melbourne and Brisbane via regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Inland Rail involves enhancing approximately 1,000km of existing railway track and constructing 600km of new track passing through regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. The sections of Inland Rail between Beveridge in Victoria and Parkes in New South Wales are prioritised for completion in 2027. Inland Rail Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), is building Inland Rail on behalf of the Australian Government. Work on Australia’s largest freight rail infrastructure project is well underway, and we’re partnering with regional businesses and communities to make it happen. It’s all happening in Junee, NSW! 16 bridge girders were recently installed for the new and improved Kemp Street bridge…

Out with the old, in with the new.

Crews worked around the clock during an 86-hour rail closure to demolish the existing Marchbanks Road bridge in Broadford, Victoria, and install four girders for its replacement.

At 68 metres long, the girders are the longest installed on an Inland Rail project in Victoria. 💪

Inland Rail is broken up into sections and each section has unique requirements.

Our work in this section of Inland Rail includes upgrading 262km of existing rail track between Beveridge, north of Melbourne, and the Victoria-NSW border at Albury-Wodonga.

This section of track needs to be modified to provide sufficient height and width clearances to allow double-stacked trains to use the line. Work will be completed at 12 sites along the North East rail line, which runs mostly along the Hume Freeway, from the Murray River at Wodonga to Beveridge. We're delivering work in two parts, called ‘tranches’.

Inland Rail is broken up into sections and each section has unique requirements.

💥 The Albury to Illabo section of Inland Rail includes upgrading 185km of existing rail corridor from the Victoria-NSW border to Illabo in regional New South Wales.

While we will use the existing rail line, we need to make enhancements and modifications to provide sufficient height and width to support the safe running of double-stacked freight trains.

Inland Rail is broken up into sections and each section has unique requirements.

This 39km section of Inland Rail, now under construction, creates a new direct route from east of Illabo tracking north to Stockinbingal in New South Wales.

The route will bypass the townships of Cootamundra and Bethungra and the winding, steep section of track known as the Bethungra Spiral on the Main South line, opening up a more efficient way to transport freight through the area.

Track possession involves taking temporary control of a section of railway to allow Inland Rail construction teams to safely carry out building or upgrade work.

By controlling the track, Inland Rail can complete complex construction tasks faster, efficiently progressing toward project milestones while minimising disruptions to surrounding communities.

We've got a track possession coming up in our southern NSW and Victorian projects and our teams will be working hard to get as much done while they have full access to the corridor.

We've officially finished work at Seymour in Victoria, marking the first completed site in the Beveridge to Albury Tranche 2 section. 🎉

We often talk about double-stacked trains, but you don’t see them every day so...here’s a close up! Double-stacked trains can carry two layers of freight containers, like in this video. As you can see, they’re taller than normal trains.💥
This is why so much of Inland Rail construction work involves bridges and track lowering. We need to upgrade existing infrastructure to make room for double-stacked trains. 👏

Having a blast of a time in southern NSW…💥🫨 After significant preparation, controlled blasting recently commenced on the Illabo to Stockingbingal section of Inland Rail.
Blasting is undertaken as an efficient way to move what is referred to as 'unrippable rock'...rock so dense it can't easily be broken down by standard earth-work machinery. Controlled blasting ensures construction efficiency along the alignment as we progress towards building the rail line.
It's another exciting component of work for this section of the project. 👏

Installing a 64-tonne bridge structure over an active rail corridor takes careful planning and precise ex*****on. 🏗️

Our teams successfully lifted the new Mothers Bridge structure into place in just *five* hours during a scheduled rail possession in Wagga Wagga, NSW!
