When Adrianis Baez left Venezuela, she had to leave behind everything she knew. Landing in Darwin meant building a life entirely from the ground up.

Yet, comfort often finds you in the quietest moments. For Adrianis, it was the gentle warmth of the locals and the golden beauty of the Top End sunsets that let her finally take a deep breath and feel at peace.

Though her heart still longs for her family back home every day, she has created a beautiful, fresh start for herself right here. Today, she greets every new opportunity with open arms, completely happy and proud to call Darwin home. ✨

This is Sandra's story. Back in Venezuela, her life was full of music — playing the double bass and teaching. But for eight long years, the music had to wait.

When she arrived in Darwin and faced the challenges of starting over, that dormant dream began to flicker. Sandra didn't give up. As the flame caught again, it carried her forward — and today she's playing here in Darwin once more, working to teach music to local children again, and finding peace in her music and her new community. ✨

When you lose everything, the things you love have a way of bringing you back home.
Sandra's story is one of a million.

"Everything I did, I did to give my kids a better future."

Leonardo Quijada moved with his family from Venezuela to Darwin, they had to start over in a completely unfamiliar place. Building a life from the ground up meant facing the quiet struggles of a new language, adapting to a different culture, and learning how a new city works.

Today, he isn't just running a business. He has created a safe harbor where his family can thrive, grow, and feel completely supported by the community around them. ✨

This Refugee Week, the room is alive with texture and meaning: heritage woven into fabric, pieces shaped by the feeling of beginning again, every work a window into someone's journey here. It's warm, it's rich, and it's best experienced standing right in front of it.

A griddle wrapped in layers of clothes, tucked into a suitcase, carried across the world.

This is the first story in A Million Stories. Meet Mileinnys Reyes , from Venezuela and her Budare.

In Venezuelan homes, the budare is everything: it's where arepas and cachapas are made, the heart of the kitchen across generations.

Mileinnys' favourite memory is watching her grandmother and parents cook on theirs. So when she learned she was moving to Australia, she had one question. how do I bring it with me? 🫓

She wrapped it in clothes, nestled it into a basket, into a suitcase, and brought it all this way. She also packed a traditional hat - the one her son wore as a little boy, dancing Venezuelan folkloric dances.

The objects we carry hold our whole story.

"Art is a language you don't need to translate." 🌻

Meet Irina. She grew up watching her grandmother work with traditional Ukrainian embroidery, those patterns everywhere, in everything and it stayed with her. It's why she became a designer.

When she moved to Australia, something deep called her back. So she began collecting embroidered Ukrainian clothes not just fabric, but a piece of home she can carry and wear. When she does, she says, a part of Ukraine is with her. ✨

And it connects her to others, too. People from across Slavic cultures stop her: we have these patterns as well. Suddenly there's a shared story childhood, family, roots.

"No matter what language you speak, you always carry your values, your culture and your dignity." 💛

From Refugee camps to the world stage.

Nestory Irankunda and Mohamed Touré met as kids playing school sports in Australia. Today, the longtime friends are teammates leading our national team at the World Cup!

Their journeys began far from the pitch. Nestory was born in a refugee camp in Tanzania, and Mohamed in a camp in Guinea. Both families found safety in Australia, where the boys grew up, rose through the ranks together, and earned the chance to represent our country on the global stage.

Their story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when talent, determination, and opportunity come together. As we mark Refugee Week 2026, we celebrate the immense potential within every person who arrives here looking for a safe place to build a life.

We are so incredibly proud to see them shining for Australia. When we welcome people with open hearts, our entire community wins. 🙌💚

Meet Axel, He’s a French painter who spent the last year and a half sailing across oceans before dropping anchor right here in the Top End. 🌿✨

For Axel, his art is a way to share culture and this Refugee Week, he leaves us with an exhibition of some remarkable faces in Darwin touched by the refugee journey.
