Rotary Club of Griffith Avanti

Rotary Club of Griffith Avanti Meetings usually Thursdays 7am in the Conference Room at The Quest, 53 Railway Street, Griffith. Email [email protected] or [email protected]

Rotarians are community members, business and professional leaders who take an active role in the local and global community. The Griffith Avanti Rotary club contains a diverse group of people from our community and we are proud of this fact. Rotary is a non religious, multicultural organisation for adults of all ages . This page provides some insights into our work and enjoyment, and links to the

world of Rotary International - a world-wide organization of community volunteers who wish to help others. Why would you want to be a Rotarian? First, but not mostly, Rotary is fun! Working with like minded people to better the lives of others is a great and satisfying thing to do. If you’d like to meet people and work on community projects to better other people’s lives then this club is for you. You have the opportunity to meet once a week, listen to a good program, or work together on a project with people you can feel at home while you live Rotary. Come to a meeting and see how it all works. We look forward to seeing you soon.

✨ Rotary Avanti – This Thursday’s Brain‑Boosting Breakfast!
✨Jodie is always cooking up ways to spark up our mornings — and this Thursday, 27 August, she’s bringing the brain teasers. Not your usual meeting.
You might want to wipe the sleep from your eyes, stretch out those neurons, maybe even do a little brain gym before you walk through the door. She’s promised a session that’ll wake us up, fire us up, and get us mentally fit for the day.

After we’ve exercised the grey matter, we’ll roll into coffee at Peeches Coffee Lounge — the perfect cool‑down. And while we’re all feeling sharp, Jodie will also be calling for volunteers to support Griffith Meals on Wheels and Hampers of Hope helping get vital food relief to people in our community.

A cracking start to Thursday — see you there.

🌟 Meet Our Newest Rotarians: Dave & Sharon!

Last night we welcomed Dave and Sharon into Griffith Avanti Rotary — two people with big hearts, big stories, and an even bigger passion for helping young people and families in our community.

👮‍♂️ Dave’s Story: From Caravan Kid to Community Cop.
Dave’s life reads like a country adventure. Born in Wagga, he spent his first five years in Eden and even started school at age 4 just to help keep the tiny school open. After two years travelling Australia in a caravan, the family settled back in Wagga — thanks to his mum, an Irish Ten Pound Pom. School days included a memorable height chart where Dave somehow went from 142cm to 140cm (we’re still investigating).

After leaving school, he worked as a carpenter across NSW, including army and navy bases, before heading to Sydney’s Woolloomooloo. Back in Wagga, Dave spent three weeks in his parents’ courier business before getting his truck licence and joining a national company. But at 36, life changed direction — Dave received the call to join the NSW Police Force. Since then he’s served in: Wagga, Jindabyne (including two hectic snow seasons)Junee, West Wyalong…then back to Junee…then back to West Wyalong. As Dave says, “We don’t work in Disneyland.”
But he does work with heart.💙

Dave’s Passion: Helping Young People Thrive. Dave has led and supported countless youth programs, including:
*Visiting preschools
*School presentations on bullying, harassment & cyber safety
*Fit for Life (Coleambally) — early morning physical activity & breakfast
*RYDA presentations
*Fit for Change — hands‑on learning with Boys to the Bush
* Mentoring, school visits and barrier‑breaking community engagement“You Should Be a Cop” days. And now, metro areas are trialling Street Cadets for young people meeting specific criteria.

Dave's met Vicki at RYDA in Leeton, learned about Rotary’s long history with youth programs like PCYC, and knew Avanti was the right place to connect and contribute.

Dave’s project idea is still forming, but he hopes to focus on children with disabilities — and we can’t wait to support him.

🧵 Sharon’s Story: Sewing, Stations & a Heart for Helping.
Sharon was born in Broken Hill and left school to work as a governess on outback stations. She later married, raised two children, and lived all over Australia — Karratha, Broome, Alice Springs — before returning to Griffith. Her career has included: Aged & disability support work and Residential property management.

She met Margo through Ten Pin Bowling, moved to Wagga for work, and met Dominic during COVID. Health challenges meant stepping back from employment, and she and Dominic returned to Griffith to be closer to family. Dominic is now establishing his music school, and Sharon enjoys sewing children’s clothing, machine embroidery and creating clever wet‑weather harness tops.

🎒 Sharon’s Project: Backpacks for Kids in Crisis.
Sharon joined Rotary because “the things Rotary does make me feel like we can make a difference — and I feel very much part of the Club.” Her project idea is thoughtful and practical:
School backpacks for children entering the women’s refuge, including: Pencil case & pencils, lunch box, drink bottle, library bag and a small comfort toy — maybe even a handmade bear. A beautiful project we’re excited to see come to life.

💛 Welcome to Griffith Avanti Rotary!
Dave and Sharon bring lived experience, compassion, humour and a genuine desire to serve. It is great to have them in the Club and can’t wait to see their ideas grow.

This Thursday 20th Aug, at Avanti we’re looking forward to a special night as our two newest members; Sharon Vella and David Whiter, share a short presentation about why they chose to join Rotary and what they hope to achieve as part of our Club. Hearing these personal stories is always inspiring — it reminds us why service, connection and community matter.

At Avanti, every new member is given a project budget to put toward an initiative they identify — one that aligns with a Rotary focus area such as peacebuilding, health, education, the environment, or community development. It’s a wonderful way for members to bring their passions to life and make a meaningful impact.

We can’t wait to hear what ideas our newest members will champion as they begin their Rotary journey.

See you at the Exies Sporties, 20th Aug, 6.30pm.

A massive shout‑out to everyone who showed up and braved the wintery, wet weather — you legends still grabbed a sausage sandwich (or two!), picked up a drink, and donated with such generosity.

And our members on duty? Absolute superstars. They kept the vibes high, the laughs flowing, and made it a genuinely fun time despite the cold. That’s Avanti spirit in action.

We’re so lucky to be part of such a big‑hearted, generous community. Rain or shine, you always show up.

People of Action — and plenty of smiles — no matter the weather!

Supporting Hampers of Hope.

This week, the Rotary Club of Griffith Avanti proudly highlights the incredible work of Hampers of Hope, one of our club’s valued donation recipients.

Hampers of Hope, operated by Griffith Meals on Wheels and Hampers of Hope, rescues around 320kg of quality surplus food every day — food that would otherwise go to landfill. This is transformed into 116 hampers each week, providing vital support to people across our community. Their reach is wide and compassionate: women and families in crisis, people experiencing homelessness, young people at risk, older residents, Indigenous communities, asylum seekers and new arrivals. They also supply food to school breakfast clubs, school pantries, preschools and childcare centres, ensuring local children start their day nourished and ready to learn.

We applaud this program that delivers dignity, care and hope throughout Griffith.
