Hobart chef Christian Ryan has been named Australia’s Chef of the Year at the 2026 Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards overnight.

Ryan, who leads Aløft Restaurant and Restaurant Maria on Hobart’s waterfront, has spent 22 years in kitchens after starting as an apprentice at D’Angelos.

He said he was shocked to be nominated, calling the field “one damn impressive list”, while editor David Meagher said the winners reflected Australia’s deep dining talent.

Scholé was named Tasmania's best restaurant, while Melbourne’s Zareh won the national restaurant title at the 60th anniversary of the awards.

A great example of collaboration on Hobart’s waterfront!
Brooke Street Pier has been pleased to work alongside TasPorts to install new parking bollards at the front of the Pier.
This practical upgrade will help keep the area safer, more accessible and welcoming for everyone who visits, works at or travels through Brooke Street Pier.
A big thank you to TasPorts and Barrier Group in helping us deliver another positive improvement to this busy waterfront precinct.

DAVID WRITES:
According to ancient Greek tragedy, the trajectories we follow are at the whim of divine powers, and the mercy of natural forces (which are, in turn, compelled by the divine). An ancient Greek life was a battle with fate. And an ancient Greek sea voyage provided temptation for the Furies to intervene.

The Furies typically don’t intervene with the Mona ferry. There is no victory snatched from the jaws of defeat, no need to ascend the shores, thence to descend into the cavern of the Oracle to give thanks.

That the ferry ride is so safe now is a result of ineluctable gradualism—a remorseless process of refinement over the interval from ancient Greece to modern Mona. That it all works so well now is metaphorically embedded in the structure of Mona. Descent follows ascent, but no deities need to be propitiated. A toast to technology and the indifferent insight of science will suffice.

The upshot is: even though there’s a shortcut, Mona requires you to climb the 99 steps to then descend again. Taking the tunnel would be too easy.
