Belize Defence Force

Belize Defence Force The Belize Defence Force (BDF) was formed on 1 January 1978 on the disbandment of the Belize Volunteer Guard and the Police Special Force.

The Belize Volunteer Guard, with roots back to 1814, was a battalion size unit that operated along the lines of the U.K Territory Army. The Police Special Force was a Regular paramilitary unit of company size strength. This unit was formed 10 years prior to 1978 to maintain law and order in remote and rural areas. Members of both units formed the nucleus of the BDF. The BDF has evolved into a Brig

ade size unit over the years, with land, sea and air elements. The Motto is โ€œShoulder to Shoulderโ€

It depicts unity within the organization. This means the BDF soldiers work and play together as a team. The Emblem, which also is the design for the Cap Badge and is also depicted on the Force Flag, is comprised of the Mahogany tree with a crossed rifle and an Axe. The Mahogany tree represents Belize and its people, the rifle signifies the Defence of the Country and the axe represents aid to civil power.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฟ BDF AIR WING STRENGTHENS HUMANITARIAN AIRDROP CAPABILITY IN COSTA RICA

1โ€“15 August 2026 | Costa Rica

The Belize Defence Force (BDF) Air Wing strengthened its humanitarian airdrop capability following the successful completion of a specialized Train the Trainer Course in Humanitarian Airdrop Operations in Costa Rica.

Seven BDF Air Wing personnel participated in a joint Mobile Training Team engagement with the United States Air Force 571st Mobility Support Advisory Squadron (MSAS) and Costa Ricaโ€™s Servicio de Vigilancia Aรฉrea (SVA). The training brought together pilots, parachute riggers, ground controllers, maintenance personnel, and cargo loadmasters, with practical instruction covering parachute preparation, aircraft configuration, cargo loading, airdrop planning, and drop zone operations.

The engagement focused on Aviation Advising and Partnership Building, providing BDF personnel with specialized technical guidance and mentorship to strengthen Belizeโ€™s ability to develop and sustain its own humanitarian airdrop capability. A significant achievement was the transition of BDF personnel from students to instructors, with the newly trained instructors subsequently supporting the delivery of airdrop training to Costa Rican SVA personnel. This provided an opportunity to share knowledge, strengthen instructor skills, and build professional relationships with a regional aviation partner.

The newly established cadre of BDF airdrop instructors will support future training and contribute to building additional capacity within the Air Wing. This capability will enhance Belizeโ€™s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) readiness by providing an additional means of delivering food, medical supplies, and emergency resources to communities that may become isolated during natural disasters or other emergencies.

The Belize Defence Force extends its appreciation to the U.S. Air Force 571st MSAS, the U.S. Embassy in Belize, and Costa Ricaโ€™s Servicio de Vigilancia Aรฉrea for their continued support and partnership. The engagement represents another important milestone in strengthening Belizeโ€™s aviation expertise, regional cooperation, and readiness to support the people of Belize when it matters most.

The Belize Defence Force successfully concluded Force Police Course 01/26, conducted from 3โ€“14 August 2026, with 26 BDF personnel completing the specialized training. Throughout the course, soldiers received training in military policing procedures, responsibilities, standards of conduct, discipline, professionalism, and sound judgment. The training also included military drill under the instruction of Force Police NCOs, allowing soldiers to further refine their drill skills, military bearing, discipline, and attention to detail while reinforcing the standards expected of personnel serving within the Force Police Unit.
