One of our own needs us and we are showing up.

BBFD firefighter and paramedic Izzy Szustakowski was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Izzy has dedicated her life to showing up for others and now it is our turn to show up for her.

The fire family is exactly that. A family. And we take care of our own.

🚒 Gimli Fire & Rescue – Rescue Practices Training 🚒

Over the weekend, September 25-27th, Gimli Fire & Rescue had the opportunity to host Rescue Practices training through the Manitoba Emergency Services College (MESC).

This 20-hour course, instructed by Richard Paetzold and Patrick MacIsaac, provided our members with valuable hands-on training focused on low-angle rescue techniques and techniques to use Aeriel 311 more effectively in rescue situations.

We had 10 members from Gimli Fire & Rescue take part, along with one member from the Arborg Fire Department. Throughout the course, members worked on a variety of technical rescue skills, including knots and rope systems, anchor systems, mechanical advantage systems, lowering and belay systems, and techniques for safely moving and assisting patients in low-angle environments.

Training like this helps ensure our members are prepared to respond safely and effectively when our community needs us. Building these skills and working together with neighbouring departments strengthens our ability to provide the best possible service to the communities we serve.

A big thank you to Richard Paetzold and Patrick MacIsaac for sharing their knowledge and experience, thank you North Interlake Training Coordinator Dave Shelenberg for scheduling, and to the Manitoba Emergency Services College for providing this valuable training opportunity.

It is with incredibly heavy hearts that the Letellier Fire Department announces the sudden and unexpected passing of our Fire Chief, Andrew Dixon.

Andrew dedicated 19 years of service to the Letellier Fire Department, including 8 years as our Fire Chief. Throughout those years, he gave so much to our department and our community.
Andrew was not only our Chief, but a mentor, a leader, and a friend to so many of us. He played a tremendous role in building and strengthening our department, helping give us the structure and foundation we have today. His knowledge, experience, and wisdom were something we could always count on.

But perhaps what we will remember most was the way he cared about his people. Andrew was often the first to check in, to make sure everyone was okay, both on the fire ground and beyond. He had a kind heart, a genuine concern for others, and a way of making people feel supported and valued.

As we come to terms with this tremendous loss, there are simply no words that feel adequate. We are going to miss his leadership, his wisdom, his humour, his kindness, and his presence around our department more than we can say.

Thank you, Andrew, for 19 years of service, dedication, mentorship, and friendship. Your impact on this department and the people who served alongside you will not be forgotten.
Our deepest condolences go out to Andrew's family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest easy, Chief. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
