Final updated regarding the fire on Wasauksing:

MNR informed the Fire Department that the fire was officially extinguished on Saturday, October 10th. Miigwetch to all once again!

A message from our Fire Chief:

“Last night our crews responded to a wildfire out at three Mile Lake Road around 1800 hours. After 25 minute ride in with the UTV initial crews stated a fire about 100 by 200 ft and that doubled in size within minutes due to the wind. Wasauksing Fire responded with 11 members. Mutual Aid partners were called in to assist and our crews worked very hard to contain the fire. Crews hosed down the area and contained best we could and cleared the scene around 1030pm.

This morning the MNR reported to the Fire Hall to meet with WFD and headed back out to the scene. Our staff assisted setting up a water supply and the scene is now left in the hands of the MNR who believe this should be mitigated later today or by tomorrow at latest.

I would like to thank our Mutual Aid partners from Seguin, Carling and Parry Sound as well as the MNR, Public Works employees and local residents. A special shout out to all Wasauksing Firefighters and Officers for their hard work. This could have been a much worse situation and because of the dedication of our first responders, a crisis was averted. This is a true indication of what the volunteer fire service is about neighbors helping neighbors.”

Further fire update: Crews report that the fire is contained, but several spot fires remain. They are working to soak the perimeter and prevent the fire from spreading further.

Conditions in the area are hazardous, with dead and fallen trees and limited lighting. Please stay away from the fire area and allow crews to work safely.

The MNR is expected to meet with our crew in the morning, and our mutual aid partners are also expected to return then. We will share another update as more information becomes available.

Fire update: The fire is inland from the 3-Mile beach area, accessible by ATV about 20 minutes in. It is moving toward 5-Mile Bay and T-Bay.

Wasauksing Public Works staff are heading out by boat with a high-velocity pump and are prepared to respond if the fire reaches that area. Crews from Wasauksing, Seguin, Carling and Parry Sound are also heading back in on ATVs.

Please stay clear of the area and give crews room to work. We will share further updates as information becomes available.
