Power To Be

Power To Be Power To Be began in 1998 with an idea: help people living with a disability or barrier access nature. Thank you for supporting Power To Be!

Power To Be is a registered charity that creates access to nature for youth, families, and adults living with cognitive, physical, financial, and social barriers. The idea grew into a community, connecting participants to adventures and supporters to opportunities, collectively redefining our definition of ability. Based in Victoria and Vancouver, we are a non-profit organization that empowers peo

ple to explore their limitless abilities through inclusive adventures rooted in nature. We believe finances shouldn’t prevent anyone from accessing nature, and we work to remove cognitive, physical and social barriers to the outdoors, supporting participants to explore who they are and what they are capable of with the support of our staff, volunteers and each other. Adaptive Recreation offers inclusive adventures for people aged seven and up who live with a barrier or disability. Wilderness School offers a three-year cohort-based program for youth in Grades 8-10 who live with financial and/or social barriers. Both program streams focus on building confidence and community connections, while exploring nature. Activities in include kayaking, canoeing, camping, climbing, hiking and more through day and overnight adventures.

✨ Bless our stars, Hazel’s! ✨

☀️It’s been a sweaty summer out here in nature, but we’ve kept our cool, thanks to our generous friends at Hazel's Ice Cream

Since June, they’ve kept our amazing Power To Be volunteers refreshed and smiling, with a fully stocked freezer of their delicious Ice Cream Bars.

Thank you Hazel’s for this incredible gift! Cheering and applause forever. 👏🎉🥳

💚 Nature gets us. And so does The Busyhead Project!

💌 We’re thrilled and deeply honoured to be selected by The Busyhead Project to be part of their Action Village at Noah Kahan's show!

💙 Founded in 2023, The Busyhead Project has raised millions of dollars to support community based organizations across the world, improve access to resources, and end the stigma around mental health.

🌿 Through our work creating access to nature for people living with barriers, we continue to witness the incredible and life-changing impact that nature can have on mental health.

🌊 We're overwhelmed with gratitude to be a part of this movement, and for the opportunity to connect with Noah Kahan fans at tonight's show in Vancouver. Stop by the Power To Be table on your way to your seats, and help us build a future of inclusion and belonging.

Every day here at Prospect Lake, we witness the transformative impact that this beautiful site has created—for our participants, our community partners, our volunteers and staff, and for the ecosystems that surround us.

Thank you so much Christine Lintott Architects Inc. and all of the people and organizations that have helped make our Prospect Lake home what it is today.

💙🌊 Last fall, a participant shared a dream with our Program Team: to visit Botanical Beach. They had heard stories from friends about its beauty but had been told it wasn't a place they would be able to go. Power To Be staff responded with a simple “Not true.”

Our team started planning, and in Spring 2026, the dream became a reality. Two participants, one living with MS and another with a spinal cord injury, traveled in TrailRiders to Botanical Beach, with a team of eight Power To Be staff and volunteers.

This trip was a profoundly meaningful experience for everyone involved. One participant remarked, "This is my 22nd year in a wheelchair, and I have become resigned to the fact that there are places that I just cannot go. Power To Be continues to break down those barriers for me. This experience has made me think about what else is possible."

Thanks so much to BC Parks Foundation Spark Grants funding, for making this participant's dream a reality, and for creating access to nature for more people across BC.

🌈❤️ This Pride season has given us so much to be grateful for, so let's recap:

✨ Over the course of July, our participants, volunteers, and staff shared unforgettable moments of Pride-filled connection, learning, adventure, and belonging.

🏳️‍🌈 We crafted and socialized together, learned about Q***r Ecology, went canoeing, paddle boarding, dancing, and nature-wandering with Drag Legends Vivian Vanderpuss and Honey Dewme, and of course, walked and rolled through the Victoria Pride Parade!

🔗 Head to powertobe.ca/blog to view our official Pride 2026 Recap, full of beautiful pictures, quotes, and Q***r Ecology fun facts! (also linked in our bio)

🎉 We can't wait for next year's celebrations, but luckily, we can celebrate our 2SLGBTQ+ community every day, and continue sharing our message that “Everyone Belongs in Nature!"

PS. Shout out to Gender Generations Project - GGP, Blue Jellyfish SUP, our friends Flora and Taylor for making our Pride-themed Have A Go so special, and to Victoria Pride Society for organizing such an incredible parade every year!

🌱 Nature at Work with BCI!

💚 Last week, we were joined by two amazing teams from BCI, for a day of connection and service.

🪏 These hard-working volunteers tackled a variety of seasonal tasks at our Prospect Lake site, from gardening and landscaping to culvert maintenance and creek restoration. At the end of the day, they each shared one word that captured the day. Some of our favourites: "Rewarding," "Fulfilling," "Community," "Team," and... "Slugs."

🌿 We're deeply grateful for the help from organizations like BCI, who give their time and energy to support our work and community. This was BCI's sixth time joining us for a Nature at Work event, and each time we have been blown away by their enthusiasm and ability to work well as a team!

💚 Thank you, BCI!

💚 Last week, we were thrilled to welcome members of the 100+ Women Who Care Victoria committee to our Prospect Lake campus as they presented a cheque for an incredible $32,500 in support of Power To Be, reminding us of what is possible when generosity, community, and purpose come together.

For more than a year, Debbie Peterson attended 100+ Women Who Care Victoria meetings hoping that she would one day have the opportunity to share her story.

When that opportunity came on May 20, 2026, Debbie stepped forward to represent Power To Be and share a part of her family's journey. She spoke about her son Kevin and how, through Power To Be, he found his way back to nature.

To Debbie, the committee, and every member of 100+ Women Who Care Victoria: thank you. Your generosity will create opportunities, experiences, and moments of belonging that will be felt for years to come.
