The ‘Flat Holm: A Walk Through Time’ project has won two awards at the 2026 Constructing Excellence in Wales Awards.

The multi-million-pound project has seen the Grade II-listed foghorn station restored, the historic cholera hospital stabilised and improvements made to the island’s Victorian water systems, alongside initiatives to improve habitats for the island's colony of lesser black-backed gulls, deliver new island trails, digital content and public art designed to encourage visitors and bring island life to the mainland.

Fairoak Primary School has officially opened, marking an exciting new chapter for education in Cardiff 🎉

The opening event highlighted the school’s strong ethos, with pupil-led work, a newly unveiled mural and a thoughtfully designed outdoor space demonstrating the importance of creativity, wellbeing and community connection in education.

This new school, formed from the former Allensbank and Gladstone primary schools, is already creating a strong sense of pride among pupils, staff and families.

🌍 Rooftop solar panels are now powering eight leisure centres in Cardiff – helping to reduce carbon emissions and cut energy costs.

Battery storage and smart energy systems have also been activated as part of the project, which is part funded by Welsh Government Low Carbon Heat and Ynni Cymru grant funding and expected to reduce electricity-related carbon emissions at the sites by around 35%, saving an estimated 146 tonnes of CO₂e annually.

The leisure centres, which are owned by Cardiff Council and managed by not-for-profit social enterprise GLL, include Maindy Leisure Centre, Fairwater Leisure Centre, Eastern Leisure Centre, Western Leisure Centre, Pentwyn Leisure Centre, Llanishen Leisure Centre, Penylan Library and Community Centre, and the STAR Hub.

Beyond the environmental impact, the scheme will help to offset rising energy costs, supporting the long-term financial sustainability of leisure services for residents.

Community organisations across Cardiff can apply for up to £2,000 to help provide free period products in practical, dignified ways.

• 85% of the grant must be spent on eco-friendly/reusable or plastic-free period products
