At Sentebale, we believe that young people deserve access to information, services and support make informed decisions about their health without judgement, stigma or discrimination.

As such, our team at Sentebale Bostwana, officially kicked off the Adolescents and Young People (AYP) Project this week in Botswana supported by the National AIDS & Health Promotion Agency and Mopipi International.

Through the AYP Project, we’re taking comprehensive HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information to where young people are — in communities, schools, youth spaces, events and other places where young people connect.

So, what can young people expect from these services?

* HIV prevention information & services: Learning about PrEP & PEP and how they can help prevent HIV
* STI prevention & management
* Correct and consistent condom use and distribution
* Family planning information and services
* GBV prevention, response and referral support
* Human rights, stigma reduction and discrimination prevention
* Open conversations about health, rights and wellbeing

This Women’s Month, the Sentebale Botswana team joined our HER Voice Fund grantees in creating safe and empowering spaces for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) to build their confidence and strengthen support networks available to them while also sharing experiences and shaping solutions to issues affecting their health, rights and wellbeing.

We extend our thanks to the African Women Leadership Academy (TAWLA) which hosted the Self-Awareness and Confidence-Building Workshop for AGYW with disabilities, providing an inclusive space for participants to recognise their strengths, build confidence and connect with one another.

We also acknowledge the great support we received from Jobs for Graduates which also hosted an empowerment workshop supporting AGYW to identify their skills and strengths and build meaningful support networks, while also exploring challenges affecting access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), including barriers to accessing essential commodities. Participants worked together to identify practical solutions for holistic wellbeing and sustainability, while reflecting on shared priorities for the future.

Beyond the workshops, these activities provided safe spaces for AGYW to connect, exchange ideas, learn from one another and be each other’s support system.

Through the Voice Fund, young women are not simply being included in conversations about their lives and futures, they are building the confidence, knowledge and collective voice to influence the decisions and solutions that affect them and their communities.

As a passionate advocate for nutrition, food security and child survival, and a steadfast champion for protection and opportunity, you have helped ensure that the rights and futures of Africa’s children remain at the heart of our development agenda.

At Sentebale, we are honoured to work in a country blessed with a King whose vision and compassion continue to inspire us all.

Today, we commemorate the Day of the African Child, observed across the continent in honour of the courage and sacrifice of the students who participated in the 1976 Soweto Uprising. It is also a moment to renew our commitment to advancing the rights, wellbeing and dignity of all African children.

This year’s theme, “Ensuring universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene for every child in Africa,” reminds us that safe water and sanitation are far more than basic services. They are fundamental rights that shape children’s health, education, protection and ability to thrive.

At Sentebale, we see every day how a child’s wellbeing is influenced by the conditions in which they live, learn and grow. Access to safe environments, quality services and meaningful opportunities helps children and young people build resilience, realise their potential and participate fully in their communities.

As we reflect on the progress made and the work that remains, let us continue to listen to children, uphold their rights and create communities across Africa where every child is healthy, safe, seen and able to flourish.

Our team at Sentebale Lesotho recently attended a Social, Environmental and Climate Assessment Procedures (SECAP) training hosted by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

SECAP provides guidance on how to identify potential risks and impacts for the environment and encompasses nine social, environmental and climate standards that guide IFAD-supported projects including those with a focus on biodiversity, conservation and climate change.

As a proud implementation partner of the Regeneration of Landscapes and Livelihoods (ROLL) project in Lesotho since 2024, this training perfectly aligns with Sentebale's commitment to combat environmental degradation and boost rural economies.

We’re proud to invest time in knowledge that protects local communities and drives sustainable impact. We are also grateful to IFAD and ROLL for making this training possible for our teams as they continue in the missions to promote climate resilience for young people in the region.

At Sentebale, we believe that boys thrive when they are supported with care, guidance, opportunity, and spaces where they can be themselves fully.

Through psychosocial support, health services, vocational training, youth advocacy, and safe community spaces across Lesotho and Botswana, we work with young people to help build resilience, confidence, and a sense of purpose.

International Day of the Boy Child, commemorated globally today, is a reminder that supporting boys is a collective responsibility. Families, schools, communities, mentors, and organisations all have a role to play in ensuring that boys grow up feeling seen, heard, and empowered to make positive choices for themselves and their futures.

When boys are given the right support, entire communities benefit.

Commemorated annually on 01 May, Workers’ Day is a moment to recognise the dignity of work and the contribution of workers in building stronger, more inclusive societies. It’s also a reminder that access to decent work remains out of reach for many especially young people.

Today, we celebrate the dedicated team at Sentebale who work tirelessly to advance our mission as a charity in supporting the optimal development of children and young people every day. We also recognise the countless workers across the social development sector, including in Lesotho and Botswana, whose commitment continues to improve the lives of young people, often in the most challenging circumstances.

Let us continue to work together in creating pathways for the next generation to thrive.

World Book and Copyright Day celebrates the power of books to open minds, connect generations, and inspire a lifelong love of reading. Marked each year on 23 April, it reminds us that books are more than stories - they are tools for learning, imagination, and opportunity.

At Sentebale, we bring this to life through our library at the Mamohato Children's Library, where children as young as 4 to17 are invited every third Saturday of the month to discover the joy of reading. Revisit our most recent Library Day held last week with us, as we continue to create a safe, welcoming space for children to read, learn, and explore new ideas is essential.

By nurturing literacy and a love for books, we are helping young people in Lesotho build confidence, expand their horizons, and unlock future opportunities one story at a time.
