We are very pleased to announce that John Hawks, Vice Chair of Wandle Heritage, Merton Priory Trust and the Wandle Industrial Museum, who gave a talk at Redhill Library about William Morris at the beginning of this month, will return in July to speak about William Morris' wife Jane.

Jane Morris was a model and muse to both her husband William Morris and the painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti, embodying the Pre-Raphaelite ideal of beauty. She was also a skilled embroiderer, self-taught in ancient embroidery techniques, and achieved great fame in her own right.

This talk will be held on Tuesday 7 July from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. There is no cost, and no advance booking - please turn up in good time before the talk to secure your seat.

During the summer holidays, we have an amazing workshop over three sessions coming up! Using retired library books and old magazines, join us in making your very own personalised, beautiful journal. This workshop is aimed at pre-teen, teen and adult crafters.

• Where: Redhill Library, Warwick Quadrant, 18-20 London Road, Redhill, RH1 1NN
• When: Tuesdays 4, 11 and 18 August, 3-4pm
• Who: Anyone from 10 years and older
• Cost: £3 per session, so £9 for the three-session workshop

Please note that in order to have created a complete journal, you will need to attend all three sessions - they can't be booked separately.

If you have not come along to one of the group's previous sessions but would like to join in, you are very welcome to! Participation is FREE with no need to book in advance; just come to the library in time for 5.15pm and make yourself known to library staff, and we'll point you in the right direction.

Thank you to everyone who came to our craft session this morning, making paper flowers out of retired library books with splashes of coloured paper. Our librarian was teaching techniques and everyone added their own creativity with fabulous results and a definitely summery vibe!😃

At out next coffee morning, the talk will be delivered by The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Charity.

As usual, we do not take advance bookings, so please make sure to come to the library to secure your seat in good time for 10.30am, when the talk begins. Complimentary tea and coffee will be available.

Our coffee morning talks are FREE, but any donations towards our events are of course always welcome.

This Great Big Green Week, we wanted to remind everyone that our 'sister' library in Merstham has a Toy Library! If you're hosting a toddler party, or if you're thinking of buying a bigger toy but wanted to try-before-you-buy, then this could be your solution.

Toys can be borrowed at a cost of £1 per toy for a period of 3 weeks. You need to be a Surrey Library member to borrow the toys, but registering for a library card is FREE - just bring something official with your name and address, and we will sign you up on the spot.

The Toy Library at Merstham Library is open every Tuesday from 10am to 11am and every Friday from 11am to 12 noon. If you can't make these times, please just speak to a member of staff, and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

THIS TUESDAY, 9 June, Redhill Library is very excited to host an evening talk by John Hawks, Vice Chair of Wandle Heritage, Merton Priory Trust and the Wandle Industrial Museum, on the renowned William Morris.

William Morris was an English textile designer, poet, artist, writer, and socialist activist associated with the British Arts and Crafts movement, and a key figure in the revival of traditional British textile arts and production methods. This talk will be a general introduction to the man and his work with reference to his activities in Merton.

The talk is FREE with no booking needed; just turn up in time to be seated by 5.30pm, when the talk starts.
