Surrey Fire Museum

Surrey Fire Museum We are a small museum trust dedicated to preserving the history of firefighting within the historic boundary of Surrey.

The Surrey Fire Museum is run by the Fire Brigades of Surrey Preservation Trust which has been an independent registered charity (number 297162) since 1987 and is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. Whilst a predominant part of the history that we document relates to Surrey Fire Brigade and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, we are not directly affiliated or funded by the Fire Authority. We are howeve

r very proud of the special relationship that we have with the Fire Authority and the reciprocal support that has and continues to be provided. Our aim is to carry out historical research and to preserve a record of the formation, equipment and activities of all forms of civic, private and industrial brigades and their members, both past and present, in the historic County of Surrey. The preservation and conservation of fire appliances, equipment and artifacts, loaned, donated or acquired by the Trust, with the aim of supplying them in active or static form to the public and organisations.

We have had an enquiry from Kye, a descendent of Arthur Buller Lowings who was born on 26 December 1900. During the second world war he lived in Godstone. When war broke out, he attempted to join the army but was rejected on medical grounds and instead the joined fire service, possibly at Godstone fire station or Oxted. His civilian occupation was head gardener. Does anyone have any details on Mr Lowings or any photos of Godstone/Oxted stations from the wartime era? I have sent Kye what we have on file but it would be great to see if anymore comes to light. Thank you, Paul
