2006 Refurbishment
These photographs were taken when Whitby Library reopened following its major refurbishment and extension in 2006, creating the Whitby Library and Customer Service Centre that many of us recognise today.
The project transformed the building, including a first floor extension above the garage, creating what is now the Reference Library. The refurbishment also made space for an open plan computer suite and cafΓ© area, giving the library a completely new look and feel.
Behind the scenes, it was a huge effort. During the refurbishment, library staff relocated the service and stock to the Coliseum to ensure the community could continue borrowing books. Staff also played a key role in shaping the new library, helping to select much of the stock that would fill the shelves when the building reopened.
π Do you remember the library before the refurbishment?
π Were you one of the first people to visit when the library reopened?
π Which version of Whitby Library was your favourite?
We'd love to hear your memories as we celebrate 60 years of Whitby Library and the many changes that have helped shape the library we know today. πβ€οΈ
