💧🇳🇦 NEW NAMWATER BOARD OFFICIALLY INAUGURATED

Hon. Inge Zaamwani, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, officially inaugurated the newly appointed Board of Directors of Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) during its inaugural meeting held on 11 June 2026 at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Government Office Park, Windhoek.

The Minister emphasised that water remains the foundation of life and a key driver of economic growth, public health, food security and national development. She called on the new Board to provide strategic leadership, uphold the highest standards of governance, strengthen financial sustainability, champion innovation and support critical infrastructure projects aimed at securing Namibia’s water future.

The newly appointed Board comprises:

▪️ Ms. Frieda Muaine – Deputy Chairperson
▪️ Mr. Nolan Swarts
▪️ Mr. Abel Akayombokwa
▪️ Ms. Michelle Handura

Hon. Zaamwani noted that under the leadership of Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Government remains committed to ensuring universal access to safe and reliable water services for all Namibians.

CLARIFICATION REGARDING WATER FLOW IN THE SWAKOP RIVER NEAR VON BACH DAM

NamWater has taken note of videos circulating on social media showing water flowing in the Swakop River in the vicinity of Von Bach Dam. These visuals have prompted public speculation that the water may be the result of a possible leak from the dam.

NamWater wishes to assure the public that there is no leak from Von Bach Dam, and the integrity of the dam remains fully intact.

The observed water flow is associated with normal operations at the Von Bach Water Treatment Plant. As part of the water treatment process, the plant’s filters are periodically cleaned through a procedure known as filter backwashing. The water used during this process is typically directed to dedicated storage ponds, from where it is recovered and returned to the treatment process.

However, during periods of increased treatment activity, the frequency of backwashing may rise, causing the storage ponds to reach maximum capacity. In such instances, excess backwash water is safely diverted into the Swakop River to prevent overloading of the ponds and to ensure the continued efficient operation of the treatment plant.

This is a standard, occasional operational practice — not an emergency or structural failure. The public is advised not to be alarmed by the presence of water in the riverbed, as it forms part of NamWater’s authorised treatment management procedures.

NamWater appreciates the public’s vigilance and encourages community members to seek information through its official communication channels for any clarification on matters relating to water supply infrastructure and operations.

💧🇳🇦 NAMIBIA’S DAMS REMAIN STRONG AT 80.8% FULL

NamWater’s latest Surface Water System Weekly Dam Bulletin shows that the country’s monitored dams currently hold 1,257.993 million cubic metres of water, equivalent to 80.8% of total capacity, compared to 81.1% recorded last week.

âś… Naute Dam stands at 110.0%
âś… Hardap Dam stands at 60.7%
âś… Swakoppoort Dam is at 78.0%
âś… Von Bach Dam is at 64.3%

Although overall levels have declined slightly due to abstraction and evaporation, Namibia continues to enjoy healthy water reserves following the good rainy season.

Hilma Nakashole: Breaking barriers behind the bulldozer đźšś

For nine years, Hilma Nakashole has stood out as the only woman operating a bulldozer at NamWater in Oshakati — and she wears that role with pride.

“When I walked into my interview, there was doubt,” she recalls. “But I proved that women can do it just like men.”

Today, she not only operates bulldozers but also drives tipper trucks, challenging every stereotype about women in heavy machinery.

Her journey is more than personal achievement — it reflects a shift in what is possible in spaces long dominated by men.

She is currently part of the Oshakati purification plant extension project, a N$743 million upgrade that will boost water treatment capacity from 40,000 to 90,000 mÂł per day, strengthening supply across Oshana, Ohangwena, and Oshikoto regions.

Namibia’s dams remain in a strong position, with national storage standing at 81.1% of total capacity.

Key dam levels:
🔹 Neckartal Dam – 99.4%
🔹 Naute Dam – 110.8%
🔹 Swakoppoort Dam – 78.8%
🔹 Von Bach Dam – 65.2%
🔹 Hardap Dam – 61.0%

Although overall storage remains healthy, water levels continue to decline gradually as the dry season progresses. Responsible water use today will help secure tomorrow’s supply.

The latest Surface Water System update from NamWater shows that Namibia’s national dam storage now stands at 81.3%, a slight decrease from 81.4% last week (↓2.136 Mm³).

đź’§ Key national highlights:
• Naute Dam continues to exceed full capacity at 110.8% (+1.017 Mm³)
• Neckartal Dam remains strong at 99.5%

📉 Central and other regions recorded gradual declines as the dry season intensifies, with notable reductions at:
• Olushandja Dam: -0.977 Mm³
• Hardap Dam: -0.871 Mm³

🌍 While overall storage remains stable, increased evaporation and abstraction continue to place pressure on water resources.
