Learners from Michelle McLean Primary School recently participated in an educational excursion to Rent-A-Drum, Windhoek’s primary waste management and recycling entity, to gain firsthand insight into urban environmental sustainability.
Key Educational Highlights
Interactive Presentation: Students attended an introductory briefing in the training room, learning how waste collected across the urban Windhoek area is managed and processed.
Waste Sorting & Baling: Learners observed the operational pipeline up close, watching how collected materials are sorted, crushed, and compacted into dense bales (such as compressed aluminum cans and plastics).
Cross-Border Economy: The session demonstrated how processed recyclables are prepared for export to South Africa, showing how waste reduction links directly to business and trade.
On-Site Exploration: The trip gave students a clear view of heavy logistics in action, including large transport trucks loaded with baled materials bound for reprocessing facilities.
This hands-on tour provided the learners with a practical understanding of recycling, waste reduction, and the environmental impact of responsible waste management.
