Join us and This Is Grief founder Kirsten O'Connor and author of "The Year After Kahlia", "Stay", and "Tiny Invitations" to discuss grief and loss.

Grief is part of being human, yet we are still remarkably uncomfortable talking about it. This Is Grief--On the Road brings honest conversations about grief, loss, love and the life that continues around them.

Next Friday 6th November at 6PM on the Ground Floor in the Event Space!

Come celebrate Faahi Tapu he Vagahau Niue - Niue Language Week with us at Tāmaki Pātaka Kōrero by experiencing our current exhibition Fenoga Tāoga Niue I Aotearoa / Niue Heritage Journey in Aotearoa.

This exhibition offers a snippet into the 30+ year journey of Ōtāhuhu based Falepipi he Mafola Niuean Handcraft Group through projects and treasures made by the collective minds, hearts and hands of past and present members.

This journey honours over 50 loved ones that have since passed on, and the wealth of knowledges, skills and wisdom of the current living tāoga, treasures.

The group has been meeting at Ōtāhuhu Town Hall Community Centre, Ōtāhuhu, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland every Thursday from 10am to 2pm since 1993 and continues to this very day. They play an invaluable role in continuing, revolving and preserving the knowledges and practices of Niuean culture and heritage here in Aotearoa.

Showcase Your Culture at Auckland Central Library's World of Cultures 2027! ✨

Date: Saturday 3 April 2027
Time: 12:00pm - 3:00pm
Venue: Auckland Central Library

Auckland Central Library invites individuals, cultural organisations, community groups, heritage associations and individuals to participate in the World of Cultures Showcase by hosting a cultural information stall that highlights their culture, heritage, language, traditions, and community activities.

We are seeking cultural stalls that are interactive, educational, and celebrate the many cultures that make Auckland unique. Activities may include cultural displays, language and heritage information, traditional games, short performances, interactive demonstrations, traditional crafts, storytelling, and engaging activities that encourage community participation and cultural exchange.

To support participation, a limited fund of up to $100 per group is available to help cover materials and activity costs, subject to demonstrated need and budget availability.
We look forward to showcasing Auckland's vibrant multicultural communities and celebrating the cultures that enrich our city.

Last week, we came together as a community to mark World Homeless Day with a special programme across Auckland Central Library and Ellen Melville Centre, celebrating connection and whanaungatanga. Throughout the week, we hosted a range of activities and events, including:

- Wāhine Showers: A special session of our regular programme at Ellen Melville Centre, supported by generous donations from local businesses Aesop and Lush and mirimiri with Ngarimu from Oranga Ahurewa.
- Community cooking class: With help from The Kitchen Project and The Mission Grocer, participants learned to make a delicious and nourishing ratatouille using ingredients found in Auckland City Mission food parcels.
- Coffee & Kōrero special event: A special session of our regular library programme with a musical performance from the Auckland Street Choir alongside our library regular Jeff, who sang beautifully and did a wonderful job as MC.
- Collab clothing: In partnership with Everlasting, we provided community members with a choice of pre-loved designer clothing and clothing essentials in a friendly, supportive environment.
- Art exhibition: We showcased people's creativity through a special art & photography exhibition in the library.
- Tamariki story time: Sonya from Auckland City Mission shared stories exploring homelessness, kindness, and looking out for one another and helped families create 'kindness cards' to give out to the community.

We want to acknowledge everyone who helped make our World Homeless Day programme possible, and especially our wonderful co-design group of library regulars: Jason, Viktor and Marika. Your thoughtfulness, insight and enthusiasm were an inspiration and a huge reason why the week was such a success!

As part of our World Homeless Day programme, we will feature profiles of some of our library regulars who are currently unhoused or have past experience being homeless. It’s a chance for them to tell a little of their story and speak to what libraries mean in their daily lives.

"I’m 46 and grew up in Auckland. I used to work as a land surveyor and travelled a lot. I was good at sports, especially basketball. I still play when I can. I also like photography. Being homeless is a new situation for me. There’s lots of people who have done more time than I have. Every night is a gamble. You don’t know what’s going to happen, and you don’t feel safe. It’s a vulnerable situation. It’s good to make friends and find strength in numbers. I go to the Auckland City Mission every day for breakfast. Breakfast is a lifesaver. It helps fuel you for the day. I’m not a heavy reader but I like the Manga books and the comic books at the library. I also use the computers a lot to print important documents. People look at you differently when you’re homeless. It’s not a normal life but things are going to change for me."

As part of our World Homeless Day programme, we will feature profiles of some of our library regulars who are currently unhoused or have past experience being homeless. It’s a chance for them to tell a little of their story and speak to what libraries mean in their daily lives.

"I was born in Fiji and have Chinese and Fijian heritage. I remember sleeping on the floor and chasing chickens when I was young. We came to New Zealand when I was 12 years old. I am a qualified tradesman and have worked as a spray painter, electrician and carpet layer. My dad taught me everything I know. I don’t mind being homeless. Sleeping outside on the grass reminds me of my childhood. Other people who are sleeping outside learn a lot from me. I think they see me as a wise man, and I pass on my knowledge. I always make sure I've got my lucky charm round my neck. My very first library card was with Palmerston North library. I have a great relationship with library staff and coming to the library keeps my brain sharp. I have spent a lot of time in the library writing movie scripts. The latest one is a family adventure movie called ‘The Loner’ and I think it could be a big hit."
