Tu Wahine Trust provides specialist kaupapa Māori guided support for wāhine and their whānau affected by mahi tūkino - family violence/ sexual violence/abuse and related violence. Providing support for the community through the provision of Kōrero Āwhina (Counselling, Therapy and Support). Our core belief system - we believe that supporting whānau, to develop tools towards wellbeing, contributes significantly towards the elimination of mahi tūkino and family violence within whānau, hapū, iwi and broader communities. We are here to support you and your whānau towards a pathway of healing together.

When someone we care about is making a choice,
the space around that decision can matter.

Having time to consider the options available,
access to the information they need,
and freedom from pressure or expectation
can allow a choice to be considered more fully.

We can support this by listening,
making room for questions and uncertainty,
and respecting the time someone may need
before reaching a decision.

Sometimes support is simply creating the space
for care, deliberation and intention
to guide a choice that remains their own.

The ways we care for and respond to one another
can contribute to the wellbeing of those around us.

Feeling heard, having choices respected,
being able to move at our own pace,
and knowing there are people we can turn to
can all nurture our sense of wellbeing.

Support can be found in the consistency of our care,
the safety we create together,
and the space we offer one another
to be ourselves.

This week we explore toiora as part of the TOAH-NNEST National Sexual Violence Conference, guided by the theme From Kahupō to Toiora: The Journey to Wellbeing.

Within the context of sexual violence and family violence, toiora can be experienced or expressed in many ways.

It can be found in the ways we experience safety, connection and belonging, in the relationships that support us, and in the parts of life that allow us to grow and flourish.

When the way ahead is difficult to see, focusing on something small can help us find a point of connection.

It might be reaching out to someone we trust, returning to something that brings us comfort, spending time with something or someone that matters to us, or taking one small step towards something that feels meaningful.

These moments may seem small, but they can begin to restore some of what feels distant or difficult to reach.

We do not have to see the whole way forward. Sometimes reconnecting with one small part of ourselves or our lives can be enough for now.

Kupu o te Wiki

This week we explore the concept of kahupō as it relates to the journey of healing and wellness for survivors of sexual violence and family violence, and their whānau.

Within Transforming Whānau Violence: A Conceptual Framework, kahupō is used to describe a state that can emerge when violence disrupts wellbeing and creates imbalance. It provides a way of understanding some of the impacts that violence can have on our sense of connection, purpose and wellbeing.

There are times when understanding needs time and space to arrive.

Stepping away from everyday distractions
and entering a place where we feel safe and connected can create the quiet needed to become receptive.

We may arrive with something we are seeking clarity on, or simply with an openness to what may emerge.

Choosing a place where we feel secure,
and ensuring someone knows where we are,
allows us to settle more fully into that space
without becoming disconnected from support.

The purpose is not to force an answer,
but to create the conditions
where insight has space to find us.
