We have finally achieved some progress with the speed bumps around town.

Last night at our Community Board meeting, the Cambridge NZ Volunteer Fire Brigade attended our public forum and spoke about how specific speed bumps and street layouts are affecting their emergency response times, trucks, and volunteers' ability to reach the Fire Station quickly in an emergency.

Today, that feedback, coupled with wider concerns shared by the Cambridge Community Board and community, was taken to the Waipā District Council’s Community Delivery Committee. The Committee voted unanimously that changes are needed, and four speed bumps will be modified as soon as contractors are available (preferably before Christmas). They are:
- Victoria Street pedestrian crossing, north of the clock tower
- Hamilton Road pedestrian crossing by the Athletics Club
- Cambridge Road pedestrian crossing near Kelly Road
- Cambridge Road and Hugo Shaw Drive intersection

A report including costs and timing for the remaining speed bumps will go back to the committee for further discussion. For now, it's a relief we have some action.

Happy 30th Anniversary to Te Kōhanga Reo o Te Ko Utu. Last weekend Charlotte popped along to the Kōhanga on Maclean Street and joined in the celebrations with the tamariki and whānau.

It was also a great opportunity to get tour and see the work the team have been putting into their kitchen, bathroom and flooring upgrade. The renovations have also provided the tamariki (children) with access to cabinets for their bags and lunchboxes, and Kaiāwhina (teachers) a more functional nappy change area.

Kōhanga Reo (meaning language nest) are Māori-immersion early childhood centres in New Zealand, focused on teaching te reo Māori (language) and Tikanga (culture) to children from birth to school age. Enrolments are swiftly growing here in Cambridge!

The Council has pulled together technical information showing how the transport network, including roads, bridges, cycleways, bus routes, and more, could support Cambridge, and wants to ensure nothing has been missed before the draft Transport Plan goes to elected members for review.

Victoria Street in Cambridge looked quite different 75 years ago.

No centre divider, wide street, no pedestrian crossing, no cycling lane, fewer trees, but the buildings and town clock sit proudly in the same spots. A lot has happened over the years! What will it look like in the next 30 years?

As part of the Cambridge Connections project, we’ve pulled together technical information showing how our transport network, including roads, bridges, cycleways, bus routes, and more, could support our growing community.

Before we share the draft Transport Plan next month, we want to make sure everything is on track. Let us know:

▪ Are there any local transport issues or ideas we should consider?

Here's an example of why it is important to share your concerns or point to issues that need attention at our Public Forum, which is held at the start of every monthly Community Board meeting.

➡ Members of the community raised concerns about monitoring of consents at our public forum - specific examples were provided.
➡ The issue was elevated to Council following our meeting, with members seeking regular updates on progress to review and resolve the issues highlighted.
➡ Yesterday at a Long Term Plan workshop, elected members discussed the issue again, and considered costs for additional resourcing for monitoring and enforcement, with all indicating their support for more focus and resource in this year.

Sharing from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi for information:

From Monday 17 August (weather dependent) to mid-September the northbound on‑ramp at the Northern Interchange (Cambridge West/Velodrome), will be closed. Crews are working across both northbound lanes for the 5km section between the Cambridge West on-ramp and south of the Tamahere Interchange. All Cambridge traffic wanting to head north on SH1, will need to use the Victoria Road Interchange at Hautapu but please consider all alternative routes available to ease traffic congestion.

What to expect:

Delays and traffic congestion during this work.

The Tamahere Interchange is not part of this work, but expect delays of up to 20 minutes at peak travel times because of the volume of SH1 traffic merging into one lane in each direction.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow extra time for their journeys, and consider alternative routes to help ease traffic congestion.

It’s only August, but we are already looking at how we can beautify and activate the town this year over December. A very good meeting was held with the Chamber and retailers this morning, and we are looking forward to progressing our list of ideas. Thanks for facilitating this, Kelly.

It was a crisp start to the morning, but warm and cosy at The Clements Hotel, where the Cambridge Business Chamber, Cambridge Community Board and a group of passionate local retailers opened the conversation about Christmas in Cambridge! 🎄

There was plenty of enthusiasm, creativity and festive spirit around the table as we began exploring how we can bring our town to life this Christmas.

If you've been wondering where the horses went on the corner of Lamb Street and Roto-O-Rangi Road, the paddocks are being converted into a new green space for everyone to enjoy. No playgrounds, hard landscaping or significant infrastructure - just a place people can walk through, with grassed areas and informal paths connecting to the wider neighbourhood. Watch this space.
