It's National Volunteer Week 🎉

A huge thank you to everyone who generously gives their time to help out across the library. Your support makes a real difference, and we couldn't do it without you.

Two of our regular Archive volunteers are sisters, Judy and Marion.

Judy is transcribing a diary by 18-year-old Jessie Trotter from 1877, helping preserve a fascinating piece of local history, while Marion is carefully cleaning historic school records to ensure they're protected for future generations. Thanks team!

It's International Archives Day!

Archives are like time capsules, capturing moments, milestones, and memories that might otherwise be lost. They provide evidence of the past, document how our communities have changed over time, and help ensure future generations have a rich collective memory to explore and learn from.

Whether it's an old photograph, a school register, a family diary, or records from a local club, every item helps piece together Southland's story ❤️

Check out some of the latest additions to the Archives 🥄

We recently received some records from the Southern Southland Women's Institute. Did you know that Women's Institutes have been operating in Southland for over 90 years?

The branch banners are beautifully crafted, and we bet there was some fierce competition for the large wooden Challenge Spoon!

Do you remember the game Scallywag?

A big part of church music in Invercargill has been the pipe organ - and if you ever wondered what it's like to play one here is Margaret Edmonston being interviewed by Merren McCallum on what it was like to play the one at North Invercargill Presbyterian Church (now Windsor Community Church).
Thanks to Southland Oral History Project for the audio and Presbyterian Research Centre for the photo of North Invercargill Presbyterian Church.

From 11 June 2026, we’re making BorrowBox our single digital platform for eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazine and eNewspapers.

Still reading a book in Libby? Don’t worry. If you currently have loans in Libby, you will usually be able to finish them during the normal loan period.

You won’t lose access to a book or audiobook partway through your loan.

By moving to a single platform, we’ll be able to get more eBooks and eAudiobooks for our users - including new titles and shorter wait times.
